In the NIH Biosketch it occupies Section A and is the place where researchers explain why they are well suited for their role on a proposed project. In narrative CVs more broadly, the personal statement provides context such as career breaks, caring responsibilities, geographic mobility, or interdisciplinary trajectory that would otherwise be invisible in a publication list.
