Additional data recorded with the specific purpose of providing added detail about other data being captured. Metadata may provide added detail about when or under what conditions the main data was created. Metadata can be used for many purposes, including identification and discovery of the data in question. Generic examples include the date a data record was most recently updated, or the version number of software used to collect data at a specific point in time.
