Open Standard

An agreed and documented specification that is made irrevocably available on a royalty-free basis with no constraints on re-use and that is developed and maintained under the governance of a not-for-profit organization on the basis of an open decision-making procedure available to all affected parties. There are multiple kinds of standards (technical, business, qualitative, process, etc.), multiple approaches to how standards are developed/set (formal, informal, de facto, etc.) and multiple possible standards jurisdictions (national, international, industry/sector, etc.). A specific proprietary product or service may be inaccurately referred to as a “standard” due to its common and wide-spread use or adoption.
