It gives a researcher who has never directed the vision of a research group the chance to build their first project, manage a small team and establish research independence.<\/p>\n<p>Each council runs its own version. MRC and BBSRC call it a &#8220;new investigator research grant&#8221;; EPSRC calls it a &#8220;New Investigator Award&#8221;; ESRC runs &#8220;new investigator grants&#8221; under its responsive mode. The mechanics differ by council, but the underlying purpose \u2014 a bridging grant for first-time principal investigators \u2014 is consistent across UKRI.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"eligibility\">Who is eligible for the New Investigator route?<\/h2>\n<p>Eligibility turns on funding history, not job title or years since PhD. <strong>Applicants must hold an academic post<\/strong> (lectureship or equivalent) at an eligible UK research organisation, be UK-resident, and \u2014 for EPSRC&#8217;s scheme \u2014 have not previously submitted an application to that council as project lead, with limited named exceptions such as outline-stage rejections and studentship or travel-grant awards.<\/p>\n<p>EPSRC is explicit that career markers are not the test: &#8220;we do not consider years post-PhD or job title to be a marker of career progression, for eligibility we consider overall funding history and portfolio.&#8221; This corrects a common assumption \u2014 an applicant several years post-PhD can still qualify if their prior funding history is limited.<\/p>\n<p>Across EPSRC&#8217;s guidance, an applicant is generally treated as ineligible if they have previously led a project that included:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>more than six months of postdoctoral research assistant (PDRA) time;<\/li>\n<li>capital equipment costs exceeding \u00a320,000; or<\/li>\n<li>a single research activity valued at over \u00a3100,000 full economic cost (FEC).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Current holders of most postdoctoral-level fellowships (for example an EPSRC Postdoctoral Fellowship or a Sir Henry Wellcome Postdoctoral Fellowship) are excluded from holding EPSRC research grants unless their employment status is equivalent to a permanent academic member of staff.
