Unweighted vs. Weighted GPA
An unweighted GPA calculates your average strictly on a 4.0 scale, treating all classes identically regardless of difficulty.
A weighted GPA assigns extra points (+0.5 for Honours, +1.0 for AP/IB courses) to reward students taking more demanding academic workloads.
How is Grade Point Average (GPA) Calculated?
Grade Point Average (GPA) is a standardised mathematical index representing a student's aggregate academic performance. In the standard unweighted 4.0 scale used by secondary and tertiary institutions in the United States and global international schools, letter grades are mapped directly to numeric points. However, because courses differ in workload, the calculation must be weighted by the credit hours (or course units) that each subject attempted represents.
The Mathematical Formula for GPA
To calculate your Grade Point Average manually, use the following weighted formula:
Where Σ represents the sum of the products for all courses. For instance, if you receive an A (4.0 points) in a 3-credit writing course and a B (3.0 points) in a 4-credit mathematics course, your total quality points are (4.0 × 3) + (3.0 × 4) = 12 + 12 = 24 points. Dividing these 24 quality points by your 7 total credits yields a semester GPA of 3.43.
Understanding Weighted GPA Scale Modifiers
To account for course rigour, schools implement a weighted scale. Regular courses follow the standard 4.0 mapping, while advanced courses receive a scale bump:
| Grade | Regular (Unweighted) | Honours (+0.5) | AP / IB Course (+1.0) |
|---|---|---|---|
| A / A+ | 4.00 | 4.50 | 5.00 |
| B | 3.00 | 3.50 | 4.00 |
| C | 2.00 | 2.50 | 3.00 |
US GPA to UK Honours Equivalency Chart
Because CASRAI serves as an international standards body, alignment between transatlantic systems is highly critical. The United Kingdom does not traditionally use a Grade Point Average index, relying instead on degree classifications. The typical conversions between the two systems are structured as follows:
- First Class Honours (1st): Corresponds to a US cumulative GPA of 3.70 – 4.00. This represents exceptional academic command and research potential.
- Upper Second Class Honours (2:1): Corresponds to a US cumulative GPA of 3.30 – 3.69. This is the standard gateway threshold for most UK postgraduate admissions.
- Lower Second Class Honours (2:2): Corresponds to a US cumulative GPA of 3.00 – 3.29.
- Third Class Honours (3rd): Corresponds to a US cumulative GPA of 2.00 – 2.99.
