Story angles

Six specific angles to pursue

If you are looking for a story, here are six entry points with the CASRAI page to source from and Dictionary cross-links for terminology. Each is researched, current, and under-covered relative to its newsworthiness.

Angle 01

CASRAI's role originating CRediT before NISO standardisation

CRediT was a CASRAI project for six years (2014–2020) before formal standardisation. The community model — open peer review, working-group consensus, twice-yearly releases — produced the substantive vocabulary that NISO then formalised as ANSI/NISO Z39.104-2022. The story of how a community vocabulary becomes an American National Standard is itself a case study in standards governance.

Angle 02

The federation model: how community standards transition to ANS bodies

CASRAI hands substantive vocabularies to formal standards bodies (NISO, euroCRIS, CODATA) while retaining the editorial pipeline for emerging domains. The 2020 joint-stewardship statement is a re-usable template for community-to-formal transitions in research infrastructure — relevant to anyone covering open-science governance.

Angle 03

CRediT adoption: ~20+ publishers and 1B+ articles with structured contributorship

Structured contributorship metadata is no longer niche. More than twenty major publishers track to CRediT, and over a billion articles now carry structured contribution data. The shift from a single byline to fourteen machine-readable roles has knock-on consequences for tenure, promotion, and grant review.

Angle 04

The 2026 revival: from quiet period to 714-entry dictionary

After winding down in 2020, CASRAI was revived in 2026 as a community-stewarded reference hub. The Dictionary now spans 714 entries across 20 domains with 20 active working groups, and ships twice-yearly stable releases. This is a study in how research-infrastructure organisations come back from dormancy without losing trust.

Angle 05

CARE Principles for Indigenous data governance: complementary to FAIR

FAIR is well known; CARE (Collective benefit, Authority to control, Responsibility, Ethics) is less so. CASRAI tracks both in the Dictionary because Indigenous data governance increasingly intersects with research-administration vocabulary — funder mandates, repository policies, and consent models all need shared terminology.

Angle 06

Sustainable research infrastructure: LEAF, My Green Lab, carbon-aware computing

Research sustainability is moving from voluntary lab certification to funder reporting line items. CASRAI catalogues the vocabularies of LEAF, My Green Lab, and carbon-aware computing in the Sustainability domain so that institutions can report once and reuse across funders. This is the under-covered intersection of climate and research administration.

Spokespeople

Who to ask about what

Editorial Board (general inquiries). Questions about CASRAI's mission, the federation model, the Dictionary release cadence, governance posture, and originating context for vocabularies CASRAI stewards are best answered by the Editorial Board. The board ratifies releases and provides procedural oversight; members can speak to organisational direction and the decisions that shaped the 2026 revival.

NISO CRediT Standing Committee liaison (CRediT-specific questions). For canonical questions about the Contributor Roles Taxonomy as a standard — role definitions, scope boundaries, maintenance process, the formal text of ANSI/NISO Z39.104-2022 — the appropriate source is the NISO CRediT Standing Committee, on which CASRAI sits as originator. We will introduce you to the liaison via the press email. Canonical role definitions live at /credit.

Working group chairs (domain-specific questions). Each of the 20 working groups is led by a chair with deep domain expertise — from Bibliometrics through Sustainability to Indigenous Data Governance. For coverage that goes into one domain in depth, the chair of that working group is the best source. Route via the press email and we will connect you.

Note on roster placements. Editorial Board and working-group chair appointments are being finalised as part of the 2026 revival. Until the roster is published, press requests for named attribution should go through the press contact below; we will arrange the appropriate spokesperson on a per-story basis rather than route you to a name that may shift.

Frequently asked

Press FAQ

Can I use the CASRAI logo without permission?

Yes, for editorial, academic, and journalistic use. All CASRAI brand assets are released under CC-BY 4.0, so re-use is permitted with attribution. Modification, use in product names, or use that implies endorsement still requires written permission via [email protected]. See also the trademark policy and the brand kit.

Is there an embargo on CASRAI news releases?

No, by default. CASRAI does not generally embargo release news. We will arrange embargoed access for substantive feature pieces — typically tied to dictionary releases or federation announcements — given at least one working week of lead time. Request via [email protected].

Who can I quote about CRediT?

For questions about the standard itself (definitions, role boundaries, maintenance process), the NISO CRediT Standing Committee is the canonical source. For originating context (the 2014 Nature paper, the 2014–2020 CASRAI stewardship period, the 2020 handover), the CASRAI Editorial Board is appropriate. Route either request through [email protected] for proper attribution.

Where do I find brand colour values?

Hex values for the primary and accent palette are on this page in the brand assets section, and a fuller treatment — with usage guidance, dark-mode variants, and CSS custom-property tokens — is at /resources/logos.

Can I interview a working group chair?

Yes. Domain-specific questions are best answered by the relevant working-group chair. Route the request through [email protected] and we will introduce you to the chair of the appropriate group — there are 20 working groups, one per dictionary domain.
