ORCID Vs Ror: Key Differences & Comparison | CASRAI
ORCID and ROR are both persistent identifiers, but they identify different things. ORCID identifies an individual researcher; ROR identifies a research organisation. They are complementary — an ORCID record links to the ROR iDs of the researcher's affiliations.
Side-by-side comparison

| Governance | ORCID Inc. — non-profit membership organisation | California Digital Library + Crossref + DataCite + community |
| Cost | Free for researchers; member fees for integrators | Free and CC0 — fully open |
| Privacy model | Researcher controls visibility of each field | Public registry — no private data |
| Role in the PID graph | Anchors a person to their outputs and affiliations | Anchors affiliations and funders to organisations |

Common questions
FAQ
Do I need both an ORCID and a ROR?+
As a researcher you register an ORCID iD for yourself; you do not create a ROR. Your institution already has a ROR iD, which your ORCID record references when you record an affiliation. So you "use" both, but you only register the ORCID.
Can ROR identify a person?+
No. ROR only identifies organisations. For individuals, the equivalent identifier is ORCID. Using the right identifier for the right entity keeps the PID graph unambiguous.
How do ORCID and ROR connect?+
In an ORCID record, each employment or education affiliation can carry the organisation's ROR iD. This links the person (ORCID) to the organisation (ROR) in a machine-readable way, which downstream systems use to attribute outputs to the correct institution.
Which came first?+
ORCID launched in 2012; ROR launched in 2019. ROR was created partly to give organisations the same kind of stable, open identifier that ORCID had already provided for people.
