Thesis

The word thesis carries two linked meanings: a long research document submitted for a degree, and the central claim or argument that a piece of writing sets out to defend.

The document sense

In its most common academic use, a thesis is a long, formally structured document reporting a student’s own research, submitted as a major requirement for a degree. Like a dissertation, it sets a research question, reviews the literature, explains and justifies the method, presents findings and draws reasoned conclusions. In British usage "thesis" usually denotes the doctoral work that is defended at a viva; in standard United States usage it usually denotes the master’s work. Whichever level it names, the document is expected to be systematic, evidenced and original in the work undertaken.

The central-argument sense

The older and broader meaning of thesis is the central claim or position that a piece of writing advances — the single, debatable idea everything else is marshalled to support. In this sense even a short essay has a thesis, often condensed into a thesis statement near the start. A strong thesis in this sense is specific, arguable and defensible: it takes a clear position that evidence and reasoning can then back up. The two senses connect — a research thesis (the document) is built around, and ultimately defends, a thesis (the central argument).

Purpose at degree level

As a degree requirement, a thesis exists to demonstrate mastery of independent research. It shows that the writer can frame a problem, situate it in existing scholarship, select and apply a sound method, and interpret evidence to reach defensible conclusions. At doctoral level — the usual referent in UK usage — the work must make an original contribution to knowledge and withstand expert scrutiny in an oral examination. At master’s level — the usual US referent — it demonstrates advanced research competence. In both, the thesis is the capstone that proves the degree’s scholarly skills have been achieved.

Often heard: A thesis is the same as the topic of your research.

Actually: A topic is the broad area; a thesis is the specific, arguable claim you make about it. "Sleep and exam performance" is a topic; "more sleep before an exam improves performance" is a thesis.
