Editorial commentary
Bridge funding addresses cashflow continuity for postdoctoral salaries, key consumables, and ongoing experiments when there is a gap between grant cycles. It is most often provided by deans' offices, departments, or research foundations and ranges from a few thousand to several hundred thousand pounds or dollars. Bridge funds are typically released against a credible application pipeline. Institutional bridge programmes are tracked as a strategic recruitment and retention investment.
