What makes a source “scholarly”

A scholarly source is written by researchers or subject-matter experts, for an audience of other researchers and experts, with the primary purpose of advancing or documenting knowledge in a field rather than informing a general readership or generating revenue through advertising. In practice, that definition cashes out into a small set of checkable features:

  • Authorship — credentialed authors with a stated institutional affiliation, not an editorial staff writer or an anonymous byline.
  • Audience and purpose — written to inform other specialists and advance the field’s knowledge, not to explain a topic to a lay reader or sell a product.
  • Documentation — claims are supported by citations to other scholarly work, and the source is itself citable (has a stable identifier — typically a DOI).
  • Vetting — the content went through some form of formal editorial or expert review before publication, even if that review isn’t full peer review (see the next section).
  • Venue — published by an academic press, scholarly society, university, or an established academic publisher, rather than a general-interest media outlet or a self-publishing platform with no vetting layer.

No single feature is sufficient on its own. An ISSN, a formal-looking layout, or a “Journal of…” title are not evidence of scholarly status by themselves — a hijacked or predatory venue can carry a valid-looking ISSN and journal formatting while providing none of the substance above. Scholarly, peer-reviewed, and academic are not the same thing

These three terms get used interchangeably and shouldn’t be:

The verification procedure

This is the core, repeatable check. Work through it in order — each step either confirms scholarly status or surfaces a red flag that should stop you before you cite the source.

1. Identify the publisher

Find the organization actually responsible for the venue — a university press, a scholarly society, an established commercial academic publisher (Elsevier, Wiley, Springer Nature, Taylor & Francis, SAGE, etc.), or a smaller open-access publisher. Look this publisher up independently of the article itself: a real academic publisher has a findable corporate history, a portfolio of other recognizable titles, and physical or registered contact information. A publisher that exists only as a website with no independent footprint is itself a red flag.

2. Check indexing in a selective database

Selective abstracting and indexing databases apply their own editorial vetting before adding a journal, which makes inclusion a meaningful (though not infallible) signal. Check the journal against:

  • Web of Science (Clarivate) — journals must pass an editorial quality evaluation to be added to the Core Collection.
  • Scopus (Elsevier) — reviewed by an independent Content Selection and Advisory Board.

  • PubMed/MEDLINE for biomedicine — MEDLINE indexing (distinct from simply appearing in PubMed, which is broader) requires a subject-expert literature review committee’s recommendation.

Absence from these databases doesn’t automatically disqualify a source — plenty of legitimate, newer, or regionally-focused scholarly journals aren’t indexed yet — but presence is strong positive evidence, and a journal that claims broad indexing you can’t independently confirm on the database’s own site is a red flag. 3. Verify the peer-review claim directly, not just the journal’s own assertion

Go to the journal’s own “About” or “Editorial Policy” page and read what it actually says about its review process — many predatory venues claim “rigorous peer review” without describing what that means or how long it takes. Then check Open Policy Finder (formerly Sherpa Romeo), which records publisher/journal self-archiving and, in many entries, review-process metadata drawn from the publisher directly rather than marketing copy. 4. Check the editorial board for real people and real affiliations

A legitimate journal names an editor-in-chief and editorial board with real, checkable institutional affiliations — searchable independently (an institutional directory page, an ORCID record, a personal faculty page). Predatory and hijacked journals are known to list real researchers as board members without their knowledge or consent, so a listed name isn’t proof by itself; spot-check a couple of board members’ own websites or ORCID records for the affiliation claimed. A board that’s unlisted, listed with no affiliations, or padded with implausibly large numbers of members is a red flag.

5. Check for a DOI and confirm it resolves via Crossref

A scholarly article published by a real academic publisher will almost always carry a DOI registered through Crossref (or, for some data/preprint content, DataCite). Resolve the DOI (doi.org/[the DOI]) and confirm it lands on the actual publisher’s page for that article, not a mismatched or dead redirect. An ISSN alone is not equivalent evidence — an ISSN identifies a continuing serial’s title, not its scholarly legitimacy, and magazines, trade newsletters, and predatory journals can and do carry valid ISSNs.

6. Screen the specific article/journal against integrity trackers

Search the journal name and the specific article/authors on Retraction Watch (retractionwatch.com, and its structured Retraction Watch Database) and PubPeer, a post-publication commentary site where readers flag concerns using verifiable facts. Neither a retraction nor a PubPeer thread automatically disqualifies a source from being scholarly — plenty of legitimate scholarly output gets flagged, corrected, or retracted as part of normal self-correction — but an unaddressed, substantive integrity concern on the specific article you plan to cite is something to weigh and disclose, not ignore.

7. Cross-check against known predatory/hijacked-journal lists

Check the journal against Cabells’ Predatory Reports (a subscription database; many university libraries carry access) and be aware of hijacked journals — cloned websites that impersonate a legitimate journal’s title and ISSN to solicit and publish fraudulent “articles” for a fee. A hijacked-journal clone can otherwise pass steps 1-5 superficially (real-sounding publisher name, a real ISSN, even a real DOI prefix reused) — the tell is usually a URL that doesn’t match the legitimate journal’s actual domain, so verify the URL independently (e.g. via the journal’s listing in Web of Science, Scopus, or DOAJ) rather than trusting a link from an email or a search-ad result.

Distinctions readers actually confuse

Primary vs. secondary vs. tertiary sources

This is a different axis from “scholarly vs. not” — a source can be scholarly and primary, scholarly and secondary, or scholarly and tertiary. Briefly: a primary source reports original research, data, or firsthand findings (an empirical study, a clinical trial report, a dataset); a secondary source analyzes, synthesizes, or comments on primary sources (a review article, a meta-analysis, most textbook chapters); a tertiary source compiles and summarizes secondary sources (an encyclopedia entry, a handbook overview). Whether a given source counts as primary or secondary can even depend on your research question, not just the document type. Preprints

A preprint — posted to a server like arXiv, bioRxiv, or SSRN before or during peer review — is written by researchers for researchers and can be a legitimate, citable scholarly output, but it has not (yet, or ever) been through peer review. Whether a preprint “counts” as a scholarly source depends entirely on context: many funders, journals, and disciplines now explicitly permit citing preprints, but the reader is relying on you (or your own review) to have assessed it, not on an independent editorial process having done so. Always state explicitly, in-text or in the citation, that a cited work is a preprint rather than letting it read as peer-reviewed by omission.

Grey literature

Grey literature — technical reports, government and NGO reports, working papers, dissertations, conference proceedings, policy briefs — is produced by researchers or institutions outside traditional commercial/academic publishing channels and outside formal peer review. It can be authoritative and directly relevant (a government agency’s technical standard, a systematic review’s included dissertation), but it needs the same publisher/authorship/documentation scrutiny as any other source, applied deliberately since it won’t have cleared a journal’s editorial gate. Trade publications (industry magazines, professional-association newsletters, most “insights” or “perspectives” pieces on a publisher’s website) are written for practitioners in a field, often by staff writers or industry professionals rather than researchers, and are not peer-reviewed or intended to advance scholarly knowledge — their purpose is usually to inform practice or promote products/services. They can be useful for current-practice context but should not be cited as though they carry the evidentiary weight of a scholarly source.

Red-flags checklist for a predatory or non-scholarly venue

  • Aggressive email solicitation to submit, promising fast turnaround and guaranteed acceptance.
  • Author (publication) fees that are unclear, undisclosed until after acceptance, or disproportionate with no fee-waiver policy stated.
  • Editorial board members who are unlisted, unaffiliated, or — when spot-checked — unaware they’re listed at all.
  • Claims of impact factor or indexing (Web of Science, Scopus, MEDLINE) that don’t independently verify on the database’s own site.
  • Implausibly broad scope (a single journal claiming to cover an entire discipline with no real specialization).
  • A domain name or journal title that closely mimics an established, legitimate journal (the hijacked-journal pattern — see step 7 above).
  • No clear retraction, correction, or ethics policy, or no identifiable publisher entity behind the journal at all.
  • Turnaround from submission to acceptance measured in days for a research article, with no evidence of substantive review.

None of these is disqualifying in complete isolation — legitimate new open-access journals can look thin on some of these early on — but two or more together, especially the board and indexing red flags, is a strong signal to verify before citing.

Is a scholarly source the same as a credible source?

No — scholarly status is one strong input into credibility, not a synonym for it. A scholarly source can still be outdated, narrow in scope, or later corrected/retracted; a non-scholarly source (a government statistical report, a well-documented technical standard) can be highly credible for a specific factual claim without being scholarly in the peer-reviewed-journal sense. Do preprints count as scholarly sources?
