CRediT's CC-BY 4.0 licence explicitly encourages translation. The NISO Standing Committee maintains the authorised list; community drafts feed into it.

How translation governance works
ANSI/NISO Z39.104-2022 is licensed under CC-BY 4.0, which explicitly permits translation — see the standardisation page for what that licence covers. A translation becomes authorised once the NISO CRediT Standing Committee has reviewed it against the English-language definitions in the 14 canonical roles and confirmed the role names and definitions carry the same meaning as the normative English text, which always prevails in case of divergence. Community drafts are earlier-stage translations, contributed and reviewed by volunteers, that have not yet been through that formal Standing Committee review. Anyone fluent in an unlisted language, or with corrections to an existing draft, can submit work via the translation programme; the Standing Committee triages submissions on a rolling basis and promotes drafts to authorised status once review is complete.
