Governance

Parent organisation

CASRAI is operated as a charitable programme of The Health Initiative, a U.S. 501(c)(3) nonprofit organisation. That fiscal sponsorship is what keeps the CASRAI Dictionary and CRediT stewardship running as public-good infrastructure rather than a commercial product.

Fiscal sponsorship

Why CASRAI has a parent organisation

CASRAI is not itself a separately incorporated legal entity. Its programme of work — the Dictionary, CRediT stewardship, the working groups, and the editorial board — is funded and governed through the charitable fund of The Health Initiative, a registered U.S. 501(c)(3) nonprofit. Fiscal sponsorship of this kind is a standard arrangement for community-stewarded standards bodies: it gives CASRAI legal and financial continuity — the ability to hold funds, sign agreements, and receive philanthropic grants — without the overhead of maintaining a separate corporate entity.

Membership dues, programme revenue, and philanthropic grants (see the funders page) are directed back into maintaining the standards and the editorial review that keeps the Dictionary current. The Health Initiative provides governance oversight and operational continuity; substantive editorial decisions remain with the CASRAI Editorial Board and the twenty working groups.

The Health Initiative is a registered, independently rated nonprofit. Its governance, financials, and charitable status are public — every detail below can be verified directly with the charity regulators and rating services linked further down this page.
