ACRP vs. SOCRA Certification Compared
ACRP (CCRC/CCRA/CPI/ACRP-CP) vs SOCRA (CCRP): compare eligibility, exam format, cost, and renewal to pick the right certification.
Side-by-side comparison
| Dimension | ACRP | SOCRA |
|---|---|---|
| Full organization name | Association of Clinical Research Professionals | Society of Clinical Research Associates |
| Credentials offered | Four role-specific credentials: CCRC (coordinator), CCRA (associate/monitor), CPI (principal investigator), ACRP-CP (role-agnostic) | One generalist credential: CCRP (Certified Clinical Research Professional) |
| Which credential to compare | CCRC for coordinator-track roles; CCRA for associate/monitor-track roles | CCRP covers either track — SOCRA does not split by role |
| Eligibility experience | ~3,000 hours verifiable paid clinical-research experience (up to 1,500 hours waivable via active ACRP certification or an accredited education program) | Three pathways: 2 yrs full-time / 3,500 hrs part-time (no degree); OR clinical-research degree + 1 yr full-time; OR a 12-credit clinical-research/GCP certificate + related science degree + 1 yr full-time |
| Exam format (CCRA / CCRP) | 125 multiple-choice questions, 180 minutes | 130 multiple-choice questions (30 unscored); computer-based testing only since June 2025 |
| Exam content basis | ICH E6 GCP plus E2A, E8(R1)/E9/E9(R1), E11(R1), and the Declaration of Helsinki; incorporating ICH E6(R3) from the Fall 2026 testing window | ICH E6 GCP, reflecting ICH E6(R3) from the January 1, 2026 testing cycle |
| Initial exam fee (2026, CCRA / CCRP) | $435 members / $485 nonmembers (early-bird); $460 / $600 (regular) | $510 members / $565 nonmembers (North America); $570 / $625 outside North America |
| Renewal cycle | Every 2 years — 24 continuing-education points plus a renewal fee | Every 3 years — 45 CE hours (at least 22 tied directly to clinical-research regulation/policy) plus formal reapplication to SOCRA’s Certification Committee |
| Membership required to sit exam? | No — membership lowers the fee but is not required | No — membership lowers the fee but is not required |
| Named in FDA/ICH regulation? | No — FDA (21 CFR 312.53(a)) requires staff “qualified by training and experience,” without naming a certification | No — same regulatory position as ACRP |
| Best fit | Candidates who want a role-specific credential tracking a defined career ladder (Coordinator → Associate → PI) within one organization | Candidates who want a single exam/credential covering both CRC- and CRA-type experience without re-certifying per role |
Common questions
FAQ
Can I hold certifications from both ACRP and SOCRA?+
Yes — nothing prevents holding both, and some professionals do, particularly during a transition between CRA- and CRC-type roles. Maintaining both means tracking two separate renewal cycles (2 years for ACRP, 3 years for SOCRA), which roughly doubles the continuing-education workload.
Does SOCRA’s CCRP correspond to ACRP’s CCRC or CCRA?+
Neither exactly. CCRP is a single generalist credential covering both coordinator- and associate-type clinical-research experience, while ACRP splits that same territory into two separate role-specific exams, CCRC and CCRA.
Which certification do employers prefer?+
Most sponsors and CROs accept either credential; a specific job posting or internal policy occasionally names one, but neither is required by FDA or ICH regulation. See How to Become a Certified Clinical Research Coordinator and CRA Certification for how each credential is typically treated role-by-role.
