Is an explanatory variable the same thing as an independent variable?+
They describe the same functional role — the variable presumed to explain or predict the other — but explanatory variable is the more cautious term. It is preferred in observational or regression contexts where the variable was measured rather than manipulated, since independent variable more strongly implies an experimental manipulation.
Can a study report both an explanatory variable and an independent variable?+
A single well-defined analysis should pick one pair and use it consistently, matched to the design (experimental vs. observational). A manuscript with multiple studies or analyses of different designs may legitimately use different pairs for different parts of the paper, as long as each is used correctly for its own design.
