Is a LIMS the same thing as an ELN?

No. A LIMS manages the structured lifecycle of discrete samples — registration, chain-of-custody, testing status, and results. An ELN records the narrative of an experiment in the researcher's own words and structure. Some platforms combine both functions, but as separate categories they answer different questions.
Can an ELN replace a LIMS?

Generally not for a lab with real sample-tracking or chain-of-custody requirements. An ELN has no built-in sample model, workflow engine, or structured status tracking, so it cannot substitute for a LIMS in a lab where an inspection or accreditation audit requires demonstrable, sample-level chain-of-custody.
Can a LIMS replace an ELN?

Also generally not. A LIMS's structured, workflow-driven data model is a poor fit for open-ended experimental narrative and reasoning — the things an ELN is built to capture. A bolted-on notes field in a LIMS is not the same as a purpose-built ELN's searchable, timestamped narrative record.
Do LIMS and ELN systems need to integrate with each other?

Where a lab runs both, ideally yes — without integration, researchers duplicate information across the two systems, which wastes effort and risks the records drifting out of sync. Confirm whether LIMS-ELN integration is a documented, supported vendor feature before assuming it exists.

Academic and early-stage research labs more often start with an ELN, or with paper notebooks migrating to one, because their work is exploratory and sample-tracking needs are lighter. Clinical, diagnostic, contract-testing, and pharmaceutical QC labs adopt LIMS earlier and more consistently, because regulatory and accreditation requirements make sample chain-of-custody a hard requirement rather than a convenience.
