Counter-examples

Looks similar, but isn't

  • Not an instance

A streamed talk with no remote Q and A is not a true hybrid format.

  • Not an instance

An in-person event with a single Zoom link offered as an afterthought offers poor hybrid quality.

Editorial commentary

Hybrid conferences seek to combine the networking benefits of physical meetings with the accessibility and reduced footprint of virtual attendance. Quality hybrid design requires dedicated remote chairs, captioned and recorded sessions, virtual poster Q and A, and equal speaker airtime regardless of mode. Many societies now adopt hybrid as their default format. The carbon benefit depends heavily on the share of remote attendees and the policy on long-haul flights for in-person presence.
