Examples

Worked examples

  • Is an instance

A lab adopts a one-page rack map kept on the freezer door so sample retrieval takes under 30 seconds.

  • Is an instance

An institution awards an annual prize to the lab with the largest year-over-year ULT energy reduction.

Counter-examples

Looks similar, but isn't

  • Not an instance

Random ad-hoc sample placement with no inventory is the antithesis of -80 freezer management.

  • Not an instance

Disposing of a freezer at end of project without sample transition is poor management.

Editorial commentary

Best-practice -80 degC freezer management treats each unit as a managed asset with a named owner, a digital sample inventory, an annual defrost and clean schedule, and a setpoint review (most modern samples are stable at -70 degC). Doors are kept closed except for indexed retrievals using a written rack map. Older units are tagged for replacement when energy use exceeds defined thresholds. The discipline is foundational to both the Freezer Challenge and LEAF Gold criteria.
