The problem is that author order was never designed as a universal evaluation instrument. Large collaborations: physics, genomics, and similar big-team science
Where author lists run into the dozens, hundreds, or (in some high-energy physics and large genomics consortia) thousands, individual position carries very little person-specific signal at all. A candidate cannot control how a given committee reads author position, but can substantially reduce the risk of misreading by being explicit rather than assuming the position speaks for itself:
- Don’t rely on position alone to make your case — narrate it. In the personal statement or research narrative most T&P dossiers require, describe your actual role on key papers in plain language, especially where your position (middle-author, alphabetical, or a non-standard convention for your subfield) might otherwise be read as less significant than the work actually was.
- Surface contribution statements and CRediT declarations directly. Frequently asked questions
Does being listed as a middle author hurt a tenure case?
Not inherently, but it can be under-weighted by a committee reading position alone, particularly outside contribution-ranked fields’ own conventions. A middle-author position with a strong, specific, documented contribution (via a CRediT statement, an author-contributions note, or the candidate’s own narrative) can support a tenure case as well as a differently-positioned paper — the risk is the position going unexplained, not the position itself.
Is first authorship always the most important position for tenure?
Only within the fields where first-author-as-lead-contributor is the actual operating convention (chiefly biomedicine, life sciences, and much of the natural sciences), and even there, most careful guidance holds that specific contribution matters more than a raw count of first-author papers. How should a candidate handle authorship on a paper with hundreds of co-authors?
Don’t rely on the byline position at all — large-collaboration papers generally require separate documentation of a candidate’s actual role, whether through the collaboration’s own internal contribution records, a letter from a collaboration lead, or the candidate’s own detailed account in their dossier narrative. A T&P committee unfamiliar with big-team science conventions should be told directly that position in a list of that size is not equivalent to a normal-scale paper’s authorship signal.
Does CRediT replace author order?
No. CRediT and author order answer different questions — order (in fields where it’s contribution-ranked) is a rough signal of relative contribution size and byline convention; CRediT is an explicit, standardized declaration of which specific roles a person held. CRediT does not determine who qualifies as an author in the first place, and a paper can carry both a conventional author order and a CRediT statement simultaneously.
