COMSOL Multiphysics: What It Is Used For, How to Install It and Run a First Model

What COMSOL is used for in research, supported operating systems including Mac, the Model Wizard steps and where results appear.

Last updated

COMSOL Multiphysics is a commercial simulation platform that combines fully coupled multiphysics and single-physics modeling in one environment. Researchers use it to build a geometry, attach physics, mesh, solve and inspect results without moving between separate tools. This guide maps research uses to the product’s module categories, lists the supported operating systems (including Apple-silicon Macs), walks through the Model Wizard sequence and says where to read results. Product facts were checked against comsol.com and doc.comsol.com on 2026-11-07.

What COMSOL Multiphysics is used for in research

Why do researchers use COMSOL? COMSOL describes the product as “a simulation platform that includes fully coupled multiphysics and single-physics modeling capabilities,” with the Model Builder providing “a complete simulation environment and a consistent modeling workflow from start to finish.” That means one model can combine, for example, heat transfer with structural deformation without exporting results between programs.

The workflow areas COMSOL lists are geometry and CAD, physics-based modeling, equation-based modeling, meshing, studies and optimization, solvers, and visualization and results evaluation. Its add-on products are grouped into these categories:

Module category (per COMSOL) Typical research area it covers
Electromagnetics Electric, magnetic and wave problems
Structural mechanics and acoustics Solid mechanics and sound
Fluid flow and heat transfer Flow and thermal problems
Chemical engineering Batteries, fuel cells, corrosion, electrochemistry
Multipurpose Optimization, uncertainty quantification, material library, particle tracing
Interfacing MATLAB, Simulink, Excel, CAD and ECAD links

The Application Builder turns a model into a simulation app, and Model Manager handles model and app management with version control. COMSOL Server and COMSOL Compiler cover deployment. Source: comsol.com/comsol-multiphysics, checked 2026-11-07.

COMSOL download

Software is downloaded through a COMSOL Access account. COMSOL states that the download requires an on-subscription COMSOL license attached to that account, or a trial arranged through a COMSOL sales representative. An Installation Guide PDF and installation videos are linked from the official download page. Licence types and costs are handled by COMSOL sales; they are not quoted here. Many universities provide access through campus licences, so check with your institution’s IT office first.

Step-by-step: build a first model with the Model Wizard

COMSOL’s reference manual describes the Model Wizard as the guided start for a new model. The sequence is:

  1. Open the Model Wizard from the New window.
  2. On Select Space Dimension, choose the component geometry dimension: 3D, 2D axisymmetric, 2D, 1D axisymmetric, 1D or 0D.
  3. On Select Physics, choose one or more physics interfaces. Add one by double-clicking it, right-clicking and choosing Add physics, or pressing Enter. It then appears under Added physics interfaces.
  4. Optionally click an added interface to review its dependent variables; to remove one, highlight it and click Remove.
  5. Click Study and choose a study type. The page groups options under General Studies, Preset Studies for Selected Physics Interfaces, Preset Studies for Selected Multiphysics, More Studies, Preset Studies for Some Physics Interfaces and Empty Study. Preset studies have solver and equation settings adapted to the selected physics interface.
  6. Click Done. The Model Builder then shows the default Component nodes (Definitions, Geometry, Materials, Mesh) plus nodes for your physics interfaces and the study.
  7. Work down the tree: define geometry, assign materials, set physics boundary conditions, build the mesh, then use the Study node’s Compute button (shortcut F8) to run it.

Choosing Done on the Select Physics page instead adds the physics interfaces without a study. COMSOL also offers a self-guided “How to Navigate the COMSOL Multiphysics User Interface” course and “Getting Started with COMSOL Multiphysics” in its Learning Center.

Output and how to read it

When the Study node has Generate default plots enabled (the default), COMSOL creates plot groups for the study’s physics interfaces while solving, and they appear under the Results node. If you delete them, the Reset Default Plots command in the Study node’s context menu restores them. For numbers rather than pictures, the Derived Values node computes integrals, maxima and minima, point values and global variables, and sends them to Table nodes. A Run all exports after solving setting in the Results settings runs the export features under the Export node. Sources: COMSOL 6.3 documentation, Study and Results Overview, checked 2026-11-07.

For research use, record the software version, build number, mesh settings and solver settings alongside any reported result, so others can follow the principles of computational reproducibility. See also FAIR4RS and software citation and code review for research software.

Troubleshooting

COMSOL’s Knowledge Base holds 184 solution articles (checked 2026-11-07), organised mainly as Error Messages (66), Installation (42), General (39), Solver (38) and Mesh (14). Licence errors, such as error -9 or 57, and licence manager DENIED log entries have their own entries there. Search the exact message text in the Knowledge Base, and for campus licences contact your institution’s licence administrator.

FAQ

Why do we use COMSOL?

To model physical systems in which several physics interact, from one environment covering geometry, meshing, solving and results evaluation. See the research-uses section above.

Is COMSOL free?

No. Downloading requires an on-subscription licence tied to a COMSOL Access account, or a trial arranged through COMSOL sales. Open-source alternatives are listed above.

Can I run COMSOL on a Mac?

Yes, on Intel and Apple-silicon Macs; see the system requirements table.

How is COMSOL different from ANSYS?

No published head-to-head performance comparison is given here; check each vendor’s product documentation against your physics and licence needs. Other named research software is covered in the SPSS and NVivo guides.

Who owns COMSOL?

COMSOL’s company page says Svante Littmarck and Farhad Saeidi founded COMSOL AB in 1986 in Stockholm, Sweden, and names Littmarck as CEO of the COMSOL Group and Saeidi as president of COMSOL AB (COMSOL company page, checked 2026-11-07). Shareholder and ownership details are not published on that page.

What is the average salary at COMSOL in India?

COMSOL does not publish salary data by country. For current roles and terms, use COMSOL’s careers page.

Is COMSOL a good brand?

There is no objective quality verdict. To judge fit for your work, read the product documentation and the COMSOL discussion forum, where users describe real use, and request a trial through COMSOL sales.
