The Helen Hay Whitney Foundation (HHWF) Fellowship is a privately funded, three-year postdoctoral research award for early-career scientists in the basic biomedical sciences. Unlike NIH’s F32 individual postdoctoral fellowship or an institutional T32 training grant, HHWF is not a federal mechanism — it is administered entirely by a private foundation, funds the trainee directly rather than through a training-grant PI, and applies its own eligibility window, review process, and stipend schedule. For a research administrator advising a postdoctoral candidate or supporting a lab that has received one, the practical differences from federal fellowship mechanisms matter as much as the program’s prestige.

What the foundation supports

HHWF states its purpose as supporting “early postdoctoral research training in all basic biomedical sciences,” with the goal of increasing the number of scientists pursuing careers in biological and medical research. The foundation was established and endowed in 1947 by Joan Whitney Payson (Mrs. Charles S. Payson), in honor of her mother, Helen Hay Whitney. It was originally focused narrowly on rheumatic fever and rheumatic heart disease research, then broadened to diseases of connective tissue, and eventually to all basic biomedical sciences — the scope it operates under today. According to the foundation, it has distributed over 1,400 fellowships since inception and typically supports around 72 active fellows at any given time across the three-year award cycle.

Eligibility requirements

HHWF eligibility is defined primarily by timing relative to degree completion and relative to starting the proposed postdoctoral position, not by discipline or institution type:

  • Degree timing: Applicants must hold a Ph.D. or D.Phil. (or equivalent) received no more than two years before the application deadline, or an M.D. or M.D.-Ph.D. received no more than four years before the deadline.
  • Postdoctoral tenure limit: Applicants must have been in the proposed postdoctoral laboratory for no more than one year at the time of the deadline. Time spent finishing doctoral work in that lab does not count against this limit.
  • Citizenship and location: U.S. citizens may propose to work in a laboratory in the U.S., Canada, or abroad. Foreign citizens are eligible only for research conducted in a U.S. laboratory, and must be able to secure appropriate visa documentation.
  • Setting: Only academic (non-commercial, non-industrial) laboratories qualify as host sites.
  • Prior training with the same mentor: Applicants who have already received extensive prior training under the same proposed supervisor are not eligible — the foundation explicitly encourages a change of laboratory to broaden a fellow’s training.
  • Career stage: The award targets early postdocs; established scientists and more advanced fellows are excluded.
  • Per-lab limits: A given laboratory supervisor may be awarded at most one HHWF fellowship per year, and no more than two HHWF fellows may be in a laboratory simultaneously. When a lab submits multiple candidate applications in the same cycle, supervisors are encouraged to designate a preferred applicant.

Application and selection process

Applications are submitted directly by the candidate through the foundation’s online system at hhwf.org, not routed through an institutional sponsored-programs office the way a federal training-grant nomination would be, though the host institution is still involved in administering the award once made. HHWF reports receiving roughly 600 applications per cycle and making 23-25 awards — a selectivity ratio above 20:1. The published cycle for a given year runs roughly as follows:

  • June 15 (5:00pm EST): application deadline.
  • Early October: candidates notified whether they will be interviewed or declined.
  • Early November: Scientific Advisory Committee (SAC) interviews, conducted in person or by video, alongside the foundation’s mandatory two-day Annual Fellows Meeting.
  • Around January: final award decisions by the foundation’s board.
  • April 1 – September 1 of the following year: window within which the fellowship must be activated.

The foundation does not provide feedback to unsuccessful applicants, and evaluation weighs the proposed research plan and the candidate’s demonstrated scientific promise as the primary criteria, rather than a separate training-grant-style institutional environment score.

Award structure and stipend

The fellowship is a fixed three-year commitment, contingent on satisfactory annual progress — the foundation does not make one- or two-year awards. As of the current cycle, published annual stipends are:

  • Year 1: $73,000
  • Year 2: $75,000
  • Year 3: $77,000

In addition to stipend, the award includes an annual research allowance of $1,500 paid to the host institution with no allowance for institutional overhead deduction, an annual dependent-child allowance of $1,500 per child, reimbursed travel to the fellowship site at activation, and covered travel to the mandatory Annual Fellows Meeting each November. There is no spousal allowance. Payments are made semi-annually to the administering institution for domestic fellows, or quarterly and directly to fellows training abroad. A fellow may hold a supplemental stipend from another source, but cannot simultaneously hold a second full fellowship. Non-research obligations (teaching, clinical duties, service) are capped at 10% of the fellow’s time.

How it compares to federal postdoctoral mechanisms

Research administrators fielding questions about HHWF from a postdoc or PI often need to place it relative to the federal mechanisms it’s frequently applied for alongside. Unlike an NIH F32 individual postdoctoral NRSA fellowship, HHWF has no federal budget-cap or NRSA stipend-scale constraints (compare to NRSA stipend levels), is not tied to NIH’s institute-specific paylines, and does not require the extensive NIH-format research strategy, biosketch, and just-in-time documentation package. What research administrators should verify with a candidate

  • Confirm the candidate’s exact time-in-lab against the one-year limit as of the deadline — this is a hard eligibility line the foundation enforces strictly, and is easy for a candidate to miscalculate if they count time from an informal lab start rather than a formal appointment date.
  • Confirm the host lab has not already placed two HHWF fellows, and that the supervisor has not already sponsored a different HHWF awardee in the same annual cycle.
  • Because the application is submitted by the candidate rather than routed institutionally, confirm early with the department or sponsored-programs office how the eventual award (if made) will be set up administratively — including the no-overhead research allowance, which differs from how most federal training funds are structured.
