A breakdown of how long peer review actually takes at each stage — desk screening, reviewer recruitment, review completion, and revision rounds — and what drives the variation by field and journal.

There is no single answer to how long peer review takes: the honest range runs from about two weeks (a fast desk rejection or an accelerated-track journal) to well over a year (a slow field, a hard-to-recruit specialty, or a manuscript that goes through several revision rounds). What matters for planning purposes is understanding the stages a manuscript actually passes through, which of those stages tends to eat the most time, and what realistically differs by field and journal.

The stages of a peer-review timeline

“Peer review” is often used loosely to mean the entire span from submission to a first decision, but it is really a sequence of distinct stages, each with its own typical duration:

  • Editorial screening / desk decision. An editor (sometimes with help from an editorial-office staff member) checks the manuscript against basic scope, formatting, and ethics requirements before deciding whether to send it out for external review at all. A desk rejection can happen in a few days; a journal that screens more carefully, or routes the manuscript through an associate editor first, may take one to two weeks.
  • Reviewer invitation and acceptance. The handling editor identifies and invites qualified reviewers, who then accept, decline, or simply don’t respond. This step alone commonly takes one to three weeks, longer in narrow subfields where there are only a handful of qualified, available reviewers, and longer still around conference deadlines, grant cycles, or academic holidays when reviewer availability drops.

  • Field norms and reviewer supply. The single biggest driver is how many qualified, willing reviewers exist relative to submission volume in that subfield. A niche specialty with few active researchers will structurally take longer to find and secure reviewers than a high-volume mainstream field.
  • Journal policies and staffing. Some journals set and publish explicit internal targets (e.g., a stated goal of first decision within 30 or 60 days) and staff an editorial office to chase overdue reviews; others run a more informal, volunteer-heavy editorial model with no enforced deadline.
  • Peer-review model. Open peer review and post-publication models can compress the pre-publication timeline because review happens alongside or after posting rather than strictly gating it.
