Short answer: Grammarly’s plagiarism checker is accurate at the job it was built for — finding text you have reused from sources that are visible on the open web or in ProQuest’s databases. It is not accurate as a predictor of what a journal’s similarity report will say, and the reason is corpus coverage, not a weak algorithm. A clean Grammarly result and a clean iThenticate report are two different claims about two different bodies of text.
This page is written for one specific reader: a researcher who already pays for Grammarly, is about to submit a manuscript, and wants to know whether the plagiarism panel they already have is enough. It is not about coursework, and it is not about how to lower a similarity score.

What Grammarly’s plagiarism checker actually searches
Grammarly states on its own plagiarism-checker page that the tool compares your text against “over 16 billion web pages and academic papers in ProQuest’s databases,” and names Wikipedia, Frontiers, PLOS One, ScienceDirect, SAGE Journals, PubMed, Elsevier, DOAJ, arXiv and Springer among the sources it draws on (grammarly.com/plagiarism-checker, checked August 2026).
That is a genuinely large corpus, and it is not a toy. Open-access literature, preprints on arXiv, and anything indexed on the public web are all realistically within reach. If you have pasted a paragraph out of a PLOS One paper and forgotten to quote it, Grammarly has a very good chance of telling you.
The accuracy question is therefore not “does it find matches?” It does. The question is whether the set of documents it searches is the same set your journal searches. It is not, and the gap has a specific shape:
- Publisher-deposited full text. Crossref Similarity Check runs on iThenticate against the full text that Crossref member publishers deposit specifically for this purpose — including a great deal of subscription content that is not free to crawl. A tool searching the open web plus ProQuest is searching an overlapping but materially different collection.
- Your own unpublished work. A manuscript you have under review elsewhere, an embargoed thesis chapter, a grant narrative, a conference paper that never went online — none of these are in anyone’s public index, so no checker that searches the public web can flag them. This is the single largest blind spot and it is structural, not fixable by a better algorithm.
- Institutional repositories with restricted crawling. Coverage of ETD and repository content varies by tool and by repository robots policy.

Does Grammarly check for plagiarism at all? Which tiers include it
Yes — but not on the free plan. As of August 2026, Grammarly’s own plans page lists “Catch accidental plagiarism” as a feature of the Pro plan ($12/month as listed) and of the Enterprise plan (contact sales); the Free plan’s feature list does not include it. Grammarly’s education and institutional arrangements are handled through sales rather than published as a standalone consumer tier, so if you access Grammarly through a campus licence, check with your library or IT which feature set your licence actually carries — this varies between institutions.
One practical consequence: a researcher who has “had Grammarly for years” and assumes plagiarism screening is part of it may be on the free plan and have never run a scan at all.
Why a clean Grammarly result does not predict a journal’s similarity report
Editorial offices do not work from a pass/fail verdict. They work from a similarity report: a percentage, a ranked list of matching sources, and — crucially — a set of exclusions the operator applies before interpreting anything. Quoted material, the reference list, and matches below a small word threshold are routinely excluded, because leaving them in inflates the number with matches nobody considers misconduct.
This is why the raw percentage is close to meaningless without knowing the exclusion settings, and why there is no universal threshold. We cover the interpretation problem in acceptable similarity percentage: a 25% score made almost entirely of a correctly-quoted methods protocol and a shared reference list is a different object from a 12% score concentrated in three unattributed paragraphs of someone else’s discussion section.
So there are two independent reasons a clean Grammarly panel does not transfer:
- Different corpus. The journal’s tool can see documents Grammarly cannot.
- Different artefact. Even on identical matches, what an editor reads is a report with configurable exclusions and a source breakdown, interpreted by a person against that journal’s norms — not a number you can reproduce at home.
Treat a self-check as a way of catching your own mistakes before an editor sees them. Do not treat it as a rehearsal that predicts the official result.

Grammarly does not do AI-text detection — that is a separate question
A large share of the anxiety behind this search is not really about plagiarism. It is about whether a journal will decide a manuscript reads as AI-generated. Grammarly’s plagiarism page says so directly: plagiarism detection and AI detection are not the same thing. Grammarly ships a separate AI Detector, and an Authorship feature that categorises text by where it came from (generative AI, pasted from a source, typed by you).
Two things follow. First, a clean plagiarism scan tells you nothing about AI-text flags. Second, AI-text detection is a fundamentally weaker evidentiary instrument than similarity matching: similarity matching points at a specific source document you can go and read, while AI detection outputs a probability with no verifiable referent. Self-plagiarism and text recycling: what actually triggers desk rejection
The pre-submission problem that most often catches out established researchers is rarely copying a stranger. It is reusing their own text. Self-plagiarism — text recycling — covers reusing your own previously published wording without attribution; duplicate publication is the more serious case of republishing substantially the same findings.
Both are common and both are frequently unintentional. A methods section carried across three papers from the same protocol is the classic case. Some journals accept verbatim methods reuse with a citation; others do not. A desk rejection for this arrives before peer review and costs you weeks.
Here is the important point for this page: this is precisely the category no public-web checker reliably catches for you. Your own in-press manuscript is not indexed. Your embargoed thesis may not be. A tool that searches the open web will catch your recycled text only if that earlier text is already publicly readable — which, for a preprint or an open-access paper, it often is, and for everything else, it is not.

What a pre-submission self-check should realistically cover
A proportionate self-check, in order of value per minute spent:
- Reconcile your own prior work. List every prior output that shares text or data with this manuscript. Decide what you will disclose. Nothing automated substitutes for this.
- Check quotation and attribution mechanics. Every borrowed phrase either in quotation marks with a citation, or genuinely rewritten with a citation. Note that paraphrasing tools do not resolve an attribution failure — see AI paraphrasing tools and plagiarism risk.
- Run one similarity scan against the open web to catch accidental overlap with material you read while drafting. This is the part Grammarly Pro, or a dedicated similarity tool, actually does well.
- Read the matches, not the score. Dismiss the reference list, the standard phrases, the instrument names. Look only at contiguous runs of substantive prose.
- Escalate anything you cannot explain to your research office before submitting, not after a query arrives.
Note what is not on that list: nothing about lowering a percentage. If a passage matches because it was copied, the fix is attribution or rewriting for substantive reasons — not editing text to defeat a matching engine, which is misconduct in its own right and is what integrity offices are trained to spot.
Where a paid similarity checker fits — and where it does not

In plain terms, a single 8,000-word manuscript scanned for both costs roughly 160 credits — so the monthly Pro allowance is far more than one manuscript needs, and correspondingly hard to justify if one manuscript is all you have.
Be clear about what it is not. Originality.ai searches a web-based index. It is not a substitute for iThenticate, because it does not hold publisher-deposited subscription full text, and it will not reproduce a Crossref Similarity Check result any more than Grammarly will. Who should not buy this
Three cases where the honest answer is “spend nothing.”
1. Your institution provides iThenticate or Turnitin. Then use it, and stop reading. It has a better corpus than any consumer tool, it costs you nothing, and — unlike a personal scan — the result is one your research office recognises. Most research-intensive universities hold a licence and many route access through the library or the graduate school; ask before you buy. 2. Your target journal is a Crossref Similarity Check participant. Then your manuscript will be screened at submission regardless of what you do beforehand. A personal pre-scan is optional reassurance, not a requirement, and buying a subscription for it is hard to justify.
3. Your actual problem is English fluency, not overlap. If what you really want is sentence-level correction because English is not your first language, keep Grammarly and do not switch — Originality.ai does nothing for language editing, and swapping one for the other would be a straight downgrade. Paying for a personal similarity check makes sense in essentially one situation: you have no institutional access at all — an independent researcher, an unaffiliated author, someone between posts — and you want to see obvious open-web overlap before an editor does.
When to stop self-checking and ask your research office
Stop and escalate if any of these are true. None of them are tool problems.
- You find substantial overlap with your own prior publication and are unsure whether the target journal permits it.
- A co-author contributed text whose provenance you cannot account for.
- The manuscript reuses text from a collaborator’s grant application or an industry partner’s document.
- You are reusing a translated version of your own previously published work.
- You have already been queried by an editor about similarity.
Research-integrity offices exist to advise as well as to investigate, and advising before submission is far cheaper for everyone than investigating after. Asking is not an admission of anything.
The bottom line
Grammarly’s plagiarism checker is accurate within its corpus, available on Pro and Enterprise but not Free, and does not do AI detection. What it cannot do is see the publisher-deposited full text your journal searches, or your own unpublished writing — so treat a clean result as “I have not accidentally copied something from the open web,” which is genuinely worth knowing, and not as “I will clear submission screening,” which it was never able to tell you.

This is the most common real-world gap, and the control for it is your own record-keeping and a disclosure in the cover letter, not a scan.
Does Grammarly detect AI-generated text?
Not through the plagiarism checker — Grammarly states plainly that plagiarism detection and AI detection are different things. Grammarly offers a separate AI Detector and an Authorship feature. Bear in mind that AI-text detection is a probabilistic judgement with no source document behind it, which makes it much weaker evidence than a similarity match.
Should I buy Originality.ai instead of Grammarly?
Not as a replacement — they do different jobs, and Originality.ai does no language editing. If you need writing support, keep Grammarly. Consider adding a similarity checker only if you have no institutional iThenticate or Turnitin access; if your university provides one, use that instead, because its corpus is better and it costs you nothing.
What similarity percentage is acceptable for submission?
