Who this is for: a researcher or student with a MacBook (or about to buy one) who needs to know whether current MATLAB runs on it, and what to check before installing. Short answer: yes, if it has an Apple chip. MathWorks’ R2026b requirements page says MATLAB needs any A-series or M-series chip and “is no longer available for Macs with Intel processors”. Details below come from MathWorks pages read on 2026-11-08; requirements change with each release, so confirm the release on the live page.
What MATLAB on a Mac is used for in research
MATLAB is a numerical computing environment for data analysis, signal and image processing, modelling and simulation. The research uses are the same on macOS as elsewhere; see what MATLAB is used for and MATLAB and Simulink. What differs on a Mac is the hardware and add-on product support, covered next.
Will MATLAB run on my MacBook? The R2026b requirements
| Item | MathWorks R2026b requirement for Mac |
|---|---|
| Operating system | macOS Golden Gate (27), macOS Tahoe (26), macOS Sequoia (15). macOS Sonoma is no longer supported. |
| Processor | Minimum: any A-series or M-series chip. MATLAB is no longer available for Macs with Intel processors. |
| RAM | Minimum 8 GB; recommended 16 GB |
| Storage | 3.7 GB for MATLAB alone; 4-6 GB for a typical installation; 17 GB for an all-products installation. An SSD is strongly recommended. |
| Graphics | Any Mac able to run macOS Sonoma has a GPU able to run MATLAB. GPU acceleration with Parallel Computing Toolbox is not available on macOS. |

How do I tell which chip my MacBook has?
Apple menu > About This Mac shows the chip or processor. MathWorks’ Apple silicon page points to Apple Support’s “Which kind of Mac do I have?” for this. An Intel MacBook does not meet the R2026b processor requirement.
Install or access (official source only)
Download the installer only from your MathWorks account’s Downloads page; sign-in is required. If your licence comes from a university or company, sign in with your organisation email address. For the licence routes and the offline-install variant, see MATLAB installation; for activation and deactivation, see MATLAB licence and MATLAB licensing. This page does not state prices; those are set on MathWorks’ pricing pages and by your organisation.
Step-by-step: install MATLAB on a Mac
- Sign in at the MathWorks Downloads page with the account that holds your licence, and choose the Mac installer for the release you need.
- Unzip the downloaded file.
- Double-click the unzipped DMG file to mount the installer as a virtual disk.
- Double-click the installer and follow the prompts. The default location is
/Applications/MATLAB_R20XXy.app, where R20XXy stands for the release. - Apple silicon Macs: MathWorks’ installation page lists a step to install a Java runtime. MathWorks’ “MATLAB on Apple Silicon Macs” page states that native Apple silicon MATLAB requires a Java runtime, that a supported Java 11 JRE is available free of charge from Amazon Corretto 11, and that native Apple silicon MATLAB is available for R2023b and up. Check that page for the current wording before installing.
- If your licence is not listed during installation, or the installer asks only for an Activation Key, and your licence belongs to an organisation, MathWorks directs you to your organisation’s IT administrator.

Output: confirm what you installed
In the Command Window, run these two documented commands.
versiondisplays the MATLAB version and release number; the documentation example returns'26.2.0.3341813 (R2026b)'.[v d] = versionreturns the version, release number and release date.computerreturns the computer type. On a 64-bit Apple silicon Mac the documented value is'MACA64';computer('arch')returns'maca64'.

Troubleshooting
| Problem | What the MathWorks pages say |
|---|---|
| Installer or release will not run on an older MacBook | Check the chip first. Intel Macs do not meet the R2026b processor requirement, and the macOS version must be Sequoia, Tahoe or Golden Gate; Sonoma is no longer supported. |
| GPU code is not accelerated | GPU acceleration with Parallel Computing Toolbox is not available on macOS. Plan GPU workloads for another platform. |
| A toolbox you need is missing | Compare it with the products-not-available-on-macOS list on the requirements page. |
| Licence not listed in the installer | Sign in with the account that holds the licence; organisation users contact their IT administrator if only an Activation Key is requested. |
Free alternatives
| Tool | What its site says | Mac support |
|---|---|---|
| GNU Octave (octave.org) | Scientific programming language with built-in 2D/3D plotting; syntax largely compatible with Matlab; “drop-in compatible with many Matlab scripts” | Site states it is free software that runs on GNU/Linux, macOS, BSD and Windows |

FAQ
Can I run MATLAB on a MacBook with an Intel processor?
Not the current release. The R2026b requirements page says MATLAB is no longer available for Macs with Intel processors and requires any A-series or M-series chip.
Which macOS versions does MATLAB R2026b support?
macOS Golden Gate (27), Tahoe (26) and Sequoia (15). Sonoma is no longer supported.
How much RAM does MATLAB need on a Mac?
MathWorks lists 8 GB as the minimum and 16 GB as recommended.
Does MATLAB use the Mac’s GPU for parallel computing?
No. MathWorks states that GPU acceleration with Parallel Computing Toolbox is not available on macOS.
How do I check which MATLAB release is installed?
Run version in the Command Window; version('-release') returns the release name only.
