What a BRC is

Where BRCs are located and how many exist
There are 20 NIHR Biomedical Research Centres, each hosted within an NHS trust and delivered in partnership with a collaborating university. - Support capacity building through Early Career Fellowships and training and development opportunities;
- Deliver NIHR-funded research while working alongside other public funders, charities, and the life sciences industry;

Each BRC is organised around cross-cutting research themes rather than a single disease area — genomics, multimorbidity, data and digital health, imaging, immunology, precision medicine, and rare diseases recur across multiple centres. Some BRCs also host NIHR Translational Research Collaborations, which bring BRC infrastructure together with charity partners to run UK-wide early-phase translational research programmes targeting a specific unmet need.
Why this matters for a research administrator
Because BRC status is held by an institution rather than awarded per project, the practical question for most research administrators is not “how do I apply for BRC funding” but “does my institution host, or partner in, a BRC, and if so, what does that unlock.” A BRC-affiliated site typically has access to specialised infrastructure — from PET scanners and simulation suites to sleep clinics — and to industry-partnering pathways not automatically available to a non-BRC site running the same type of study. Confirming BRC affiliation early, and understanding which research theme a given BRC prioritises, can materially change how a study is resourced and where it is best sited.
