  • Program solicitations are formal funding opportunity announcements with their own eligibility rules, proposal-preparation requirements, deadlines (or target dates), and review process. Grants.gov cross-posting

NSF, like most US federal grant-making agencies, also posts many funding opportunities to Grants.gov, the government-wide portal that aggregates opportunities across agencies. This matters for two practical reasons. First, an institution or investigator scanning Grants.gov broadly (for example, tracking multiple agencies at once, or set up to receive Grants.gov’s own saved-search alerts) may encounter an NSF opportunity there before or alongside seeing it on nsf.gov directly. Second, and more important operationally: cross-posting to Grants.gov is not guaranteed to be comprehensive or perfectly synchronized with NSF’s own listing. Standing program descriptions and some DCL-referenced mechanisms in particular are less consistently mirrored on Grants.gov than numbered program solicitations are.   • Check both solicitations and DCLs for the relevant program area — a DCL with no matching solicitation yet is still actionable information for a PI planning six to twelve months out.
  • Subscribe to updates for the directorates or programs your institution’s investigators use most, rather than re-searching from scratch each cycle.
  • Confirm the controlling document before treating any deadline, budget cap, or eligibility rule as final — the specific solicitation or program description, not a summary (including this one), governs.
