  • Governance. GBIF is an intergovernmental network coordinated by a Secretariat and funded by participating governments and organizations, structured around regional Participant Nodes.   • Registration and data flow. The reverse is not automatic: a marine-relevant dataset published only to GBIF by a node outside the OBIS network is not necessarily mirrored into OBIS.   • Collaboration. OBIS and GBIF both publish data using Darwin Core, the Biodiversity Information Standards (TDWG) vocabulary for documenting species occurrences, taxonomic identifications, and associated event and location data. Datasets are commonly packaged as Darwin Core Archives (DwC-A) — a zipped bundle of Darwin Core–mapped data files plus a machine-readable descriptor — and both platforms have supported and jointly refined the Integrated Publishing Toolkit (IPT), the common software used by contributing institutions to build and validate these archives before submission. How Researchers and Institutions Use OBIS

Marine researchers, oceanographic institutions, and national data centers use OBIS in two directions:

  • Publishing. An institution generating marine species-occurrence data — from survey cruises, monitoring stations, tagging studies, eDNA sampling, or museum specimen digitization — can register as (or contribute through) an OBIS node, format the dataset in Darwin Core, and publish it through the OBIS network, making it openly citable and discoverable.
  • Reuse. Researchers building species-distribution models, tracking range shifts under climate change, conducting marine spatial planning, or supporting conservation assessments query OBIS’s combined dataset rather than trying to individually locate and reconcile occurrence records scattered across dozens of separate institutional databases.
