2. Set visibility deliberately, not by default
Every item on an ORCID record — each name, affiliation, work, and funding entry — carries its own visibility setting, independent of the others. 3. Turn on auto-update so new works attach without manual entry
Manually re-entering every new publication is the single biggest reason ORCID records go stale. ORCID, Crossref, and DataCite jointly run an auto-update mechanism that removes most of that manual work:
- Crossref Auto-Update: when a publisher registers a DOI with your ORCID iD embedded in the deposited metadata, Crossref sends a permission request to your ORCID inbox; once you accept it for that source, subsequent DOIs from the same publisher auto-attach to your record without further action.
- DataCite Auto-Update: works the same way in principle but is enabled from your own DataCite Commons profile rather than an inbox invitation — turning it on there means any new DOI registered with your iD in the metadata (including datasets, software, and other DataCite-registered outputs) auto-attaches going forward.
