Research Paradigm Explained: Positivism, Interpretivism, Pragmatism, and Critical Theory

A research paradigm is the underlying set of beliefs a researcher holds about the nature of reality and the nature of knowledge, and it is what ultimately justifies the choice of research approach, design, and methods in a study. Where a research approach is the practical decision to run a quantitative, qualitative, or mixed-methods study, the paradigm is the philosophical layer underneath that decision — it is why a particular approach is the appropriate one for a given research question, not merely a stylistic preference.

What a research paradigm actually is

The most widely cited framework for describing research paradigms comes from Egon Guba and Yvonna Lincoln, who defined a paradigm as a basic set of beliefs that guides action and is characterized by how it answers three foundational questions:

  • Ontological question — What is the nature of reality? Is there a single, objective reality that exists independently of the observer, or are there multiple, socially constructed realities?
  • Epistemological question — What is the nature of the relationship between the researcher (the knower) and what can be known? Can the researcher study a phenomenon as a detached, objective observer, or is knowledge inevitably co-created through interaction with what is being studied?
  • Methodological question — How should the researcher go about finding out whatever they believe can be known? This is where the ontological and epistemological answers translate into a choice of methods.

A fourth element, axiology — the role of the researcher’s own values in the inquiry — is often added to this framework in later methods literature. Together, a researcher’s answers to these questions constitute their paradigm, and that paradigm is what makes a given methodology choice coherent rather than arbitrary. Two researchers studying the same topic can legitimately choose very different methods, and the paradigm is what explains why each choice is defensible on its own terms.

The four paradigms

Positivism (and post-positivism)

Positivism holds that a single, objective reality exists independently of the researcher and can, at least in principle, be measured and known. The classical positivist position treats the researcher and the object of study as separable: the researcher can observe a phenomenon without influencing it. Post-positivism, the dominant form of this paradigm in contemporary practice, softens this claim — reality exists, but human perception and measurement are imperfect, so knowledge is always probabilistic rather than certain, and findings are treated as best-available approximations subject to revision. Positivist and post-positivist paradigms are typically associated with quantitative methodology: hypothesis testing, standardized measurement, statistical analysis, and a search for generalizable relationships between variables.

Interpretivism / Constructivism

Interpretivism (often used interchangeably with constructivism, though some methods texts distinguish them) holds that reality is not singular and external but socially and experientially constructed, and that there can be multiple, equally valid understandings of the same phenomenon depending on who is experiencing it and in what context. The researcher’s role is to understand the subjective meaning participants make of their experience, not to measure an external, fixed truth. Because meaning is treated as context-bound and co-constructed through the interaction between researcher and participant, this paradigm favors inductive, emergent qualitative methodology — approaches such as interviews, ethnography, and case study research — over standardized instruments, and it does not aim for statistical generalization in the way positivist research does.

Pragmatism

Pragmatism rejects the idea that a researcher must first settle the ontological and epistemological debate before choosing methods. Instead, it treats the research question and its practical consequences as the primary guide: the researcher selects whatever combination of quantitative and qualitative methods will most usefully answer the question at hand, rather than being constrained to methods that are strictly consistent with a single philosophical position. Pragmatism is the paradigm most closely associated with mixed-methods research, since it provides the philosophical justification for combining numerical and narrative data within a single study without treating that combination as internally contradictory.

Critical theory (transformative paradigm)

Critical theory — sometimes called the transformative paradigm — holds that reality is shaped by social, political, cultural, economic, and historical structures of power, and that research is never a neutral, value-free activity. Inquiry conducted from this paradigm explicitly aims to surface and challenge power imbalances, oppression, and inequity, often working collaboratively with the communities being studied rather than treating them purely as subjects of observation. Methodologically, critical-theory research frequently uses qualitative and participatory methods — participatory action research, critical ethnography, feminist and decolonizing methodologies — chosen specifically because they allow participants a role in shaping the inquiry itself, which the paradigm treats as inseparable from its goal of social change.

How paradigm shapes methodology selection

Paradigm is not a box a researcher checks after the fact to justify a methods choice already made for convenience — in a well-designed study, it is what the methods choice follows from. In practice, this shows up in a few concrete ways:

  • What counts as valid evidence. A positivist study treats standardized, replicable measurement as the strongest evidence; an interpretivist study treats rich, contextual, first-person accounts as the strongest evidence. Choosing a survey instrument versus a series of open-ended interviews is not just a practical decision — it follows from what the paradigm considers a legitimate way of knowing something.
  • The role of the researcher. Positivist and post-positivist designs are built around minimizing the researcher’s influence on what is being studied. Interpretivist and critical designs generally treat the researcher’s perspective and positionality as inseparable from the findings, and often require the researcher to disclose and reflect on that positionality explicitly.
  • What rigor and generalizability mean. Quantitative, positivist-paradigm work is typically judged on criteria like reliability, validity, and statistical generalizability to a broader population. Qualitative, interpretivist-paradigm work is more often judged on criteria like credibility, transferability, and trustworthiness — concepts Lincoln and Guba proposed specifically as qualitative analogues to positivist rigor criteria, rather than an absence of rigor.
  • How the methodology section gets justified in writing. A manuscript’s methodology section is expected to show that the methods chosen are appropriate to the research question — reviewers and editors read the paradigm (even when it is not named explicitly) through the coherence between the stated research question, the chosen methods, and the way findings are analyzed and reported. A mismatch — for example, claiming an inductive, exploratory research question but then only reporting confirmatory statistical tests — is a common source of reviewer pushback, because it signals the paradigm and the methods were not actually aligned.

Naming the paradigm versus using it

Not every discipline or every journal expects authors to name their paradigm explicitly. In much quantitative social science and in the biomedical sciences, the positivist/post-positivist paradigm is often the unstated default and is rarely named directly in a manuscript. Qualitative methods sections, dissertations, and disciplines with a strong tradition of methodological reflexivity (education, nursing, social work, information science) are more likely to require an explicit paradigm statement — typically a short passage early in the methods chapter or section identifying the paradigm, its ontological and epistemological assumptions, and why it fits the research question. Graduate students should check their specific program or journal’s expectations rather than assume a paradigm statement is either required or unnecessary.

What is the difference between a research paradigm and a research approach?

Much quantitative and biomedical research leaves the (typically post-positivist) paradigm unstated. When in doubt, check discipline norms, your supervisor’s or journal’s expectations, and comparable published studies in the target venue.

How does critical theory differ from interpretivism?
