Rollator Dimensions: Width, Seat Height and Weight Capacity

Rollator dimensions from two manufacturer sheets: overall width, height, seat size, folded size and weight capacity, checked against the ADA 32 in doorway.

General product information only, not medical advice. A clinician or mobility specialist decides which rollator suits a person.

Short answer

Rollator dimensions are the printed measurements and limits on a manufacturer’s specification sheet: overall width and length, handgrip height range, seat height, width and depth, folded size, product weight and maximum user weight. They differ by model. Two manufacturer sheets list an overall width of 25.4 inches and 28.5 inches, and weight capacities of 300 lb and 400 lb.

Definition and scope

A rollator is a wheeled walker with a seat and hand brakes; what a walker is and the named parts of a rollator are covered separately. This page covers only the numbers a specification sheet reports and how to read them. The fields that matter most are:

  • Overall width and length: the space the frame occupies when open.
  • Handgrip (overall) height range: the span the handles adjust through.
  • Seat height, seat width and seat depth: the sitting surface.
  • Folded size: width, height and length when stored or carried.
  • Product weight: the weight of the rollator itself.
  • Weight capacity: the maximum load the manufacturer states.

Two manufacturer specification sheets side by side

The table uses only figures printed in two manufacturer documents, checked 2026-10-30. Each column is one model, not a typical range. Blank cells mean the document does not print that figure.

Specification Journey Breeze (product code WA01083) Karman R-4700 series (extra-wide, 8 in wheels)
Overall width 25.4 in 28.5 in (overall open width)
Length 26 in Not printed
Height 31 to 38 in (handgrip height range) 33 to 37 in (overall height)
Seat width 18.1 in 23 in (seat pad width 18 in)
Seat depth 9.8 in 13.5 in (seat pad depth)
Seat height 21 in (one value printed) 22 in
Folded size 10.6 in wide, 13.4 in high, 23.6 in long Not printed
Product weight 18 lb Printed as both 20 lb and 24 lb in the same document
Maximum user weight 300 lb 400 lb

The spread between the two is the point: the extra-wide model is 3.1 inches wider overall (28.5 minus 25.4, editorial arithmetic), has a deeper seat pad and carries 100 lb more rated capacity. Karman’s sheet also states that specifications are subject to change without notice, and prints its product weight two ways, so no single weight is given for it. Check the current sheet for the exact model.

How the figures are used in practice

Doorways and walkways

The U.S. Access Board’s ADA Standards (2010) require a door opening clear width of 32 inches (815 mm) minimum, measured between the face of the door and the stop with the door open 90 degrees, and 36 inches (915 mm) minimum where the opening is more than 24 inches deep (section 404.2.3). Walking surfaces need 36 inches (915 mm) clear width, reducible to 32 inches for a length of 24 inches at most under the exception in 403.5.1. Set against those figures, 25.4 inches and 28.5 inches of overall width leave 6.6 and 3.5 inches to spare in a 32 inch opening (editorial arithmetic). The sheets give overall width, not handle-to-handle or wheel-to-wheel width, and neither states a turning space. The ADA standards describe access in public buildings; they say nothing about a particular home. For the same cross-check on powered devices see power chair dimensions, and for floor transitions see threshold ramps.

Folded size and transport

Folded dimensions matter when a rollator goes into a vehicle or a storage room. Journey prints 10.6 by 13.4 by 23.6 inches folded; Karman’s R-4700 sheet does not print a folded size, so folded size cannot be assumed from the open width.

Handle and seat height

NOVA Medical Products’ Express Rollator manual states that rollators are not one size fits all and names two fit points: handle height for walking posture and seat height. Journey’s Breeze adjusts its handgrips over 31 to 38 inches. How to set the handle height is covered in how a rollator is used.

Types and related concepts: what are the different types of mobility walkers?

Mobility walkers include standard walkers without wheels, walkers with front wheels, and wheeled rollators with brakes and a seat. Each type has its own dimension fields, so figures from a rollator sheet do not transfer to another type. The full breakdown is in What Is a Walker?.

Where it matters for labs, clinics and supply decisions

When supply staff compare models, the useful habit is to line up the same field from each sheet: overall width with overall width, folded size with folded size, and weight capacity with weight capacity. Comparing a handgrip height range with an overall height, as the two sheets above print them, mixes two different measurements.

Rollator weight capacity: how to read it

Journey’s manual states a maximum load and a maximum user weight of 300 lb and adds that if the user weighs 275 lb, no more than 25 lb can be carried. Capacity is therefore a total load, not only body weight. NOVA’s manual says not to exceed 300 lb and gives a separate bag or basket capacity of 10 lb, with items not hanging over the top. Karman’s R-4700 series is rated at 400 lb. Capacity is set per model, so a rating from one brand says nothing about another.

Common misunderstandings

  • “Rollator sizes” are standard. The two sheets above differ in width, seat and capacity; there is no shared size scale in them.
  • Capacity means the user’s weight only. Journey’s own example counts carried items against the limit.
  • Overall width is the handle spacing. The sheets print overall width and do not say how far apart the handles are.
  • A seat height range exists on every model. Journey prints a single seat height value (21 in).

Frequently asked questions

What are the dimensions of a rollator?

They vary by model. A standard model printed in one manual is 25.4 inches wide and 26 inches long with handgrips from 31 to 38 inches; an extra-wide series is 28.5 inches wide overall.

What is a rollator’s weight capacity?

It is set by the manufacturer per model. The sheets cited here state 300 lb (Journey Breeze and NOVA Express) and 400 lb (Karman R-4700 series), and Journey counts carried items toward its limit.

What are rollator sizes?

The manufacturer documents cited here list specific measurements per model, not named sizes. Compare overall width, seat width and depth, height range and capacity on the sheet for the model in question.

What are the different types of mobility walkers?

Standard walkers, walkers with wheels and rollators with seats and brakes. See What Is a Walker? for the breakdown.
