Shodhganga only records completed, awarded theses. What Shodhganga can’t tell you
Treat Shodhganga as one input into gap analysis, not the whole process:
- It only covers Indian universities. A topic can be well covered internationally — in journals, or in theses from universities outside India — while looking wide open in Shodhganga alone. A genuine literature review still needs international databases and journal literature, not just this one national repository.
- Deposit lag varies by university. Because upload runs through each university’s own Shodhganga coordinator rather than a centralised, uniformly fast process, very recent theses from slower-depositing institutions may not yet be visible, which can make a subject look less recently active than it is.
- Coverage depends on which universities have joined and how completely. As covered above, thin results can mean thin deposit history rather than a genuine gap — always cross-check against the university-list view before concluding an area is under-researched.
- It is a repository, not a citation index. Shodhganga doesn’t tell you how influential or how frequently cited a given thesis’s contribution has been; it only tells you that the work exists. Bibliometric assessment is a separate task from gap-scoping.
Turning a gap into a topic statement
Once the search-and-read process above has surfaced a candidate gap, a workable topic statement generally needs to specify, at minimum: the population or dataset, the geography or institutional scope, the time period, and the specific mechanism or relationship being examined — not just the general subject area. A statement narrow enough to survive the same Shodhganga search process you just ran (i.e., a keyword and subject search on the proposed topic returns little to nothing directly on point, and the closest related theses explicitly flag it as unaddressed) is in a much stronger position at the synopsis stage than one that only sounds novel because it hasn’t been searched carefully yet.
