What STFC funds: its subject remit
STFC’s stated mission is to deliver world-leading national and international research and innovation capabilities and, through those, discover the secrets of the universe. Its subject remit covers astronomy, particle physics, particle astrophysics, nuclear physics, space science, astrophysics and cosmology, solar system physics, and computational science supporting those fields. This makes STFC narrower in subject scope than most other UKRI councils, but its remit extends beyond funding individual research grants: STFC also owns and operates major national research infrastructure, and manages the UK’s subscriptions to international physics and astronomy facilities, which is not something any other UKRI research council does at comparable scale.
STFC’s facilities: what makes it different from the other research councils
STFC operates major research campuses at Harwell (Oxfordshire) and Daresbury (Cheshire), and funds or hosts large scientific facilities including the ISIS Neutron and Muon Source, the Diamond Light Source (a synchrotron, jointly owned with the Wellcome Trust), and the Central Laser Facility, all based at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory on the Harwell campus. Main STFC grant types

- Consolidated Awards. STFC’s core responsive-mode mechanism for established research groups, covering a programme of related activity within a single department rather than one project at a time. Consolidated awards are awarded for a maximum of four years, and only one application per department per research area is permitted per submission round — departments cannot submit competing consolidated bids in the same area.
- Consortium Grants. Function as a joint consolidated grant, allowing a single application to support a coordinated research programme spanning multiple institutions rather than one department alone.
- Joint Grants. Standard-award-type funding designed to support research delivered across more than one research organisation, submitted as a single application incorporating all partner institutions rather than as separate linked bids.
- Standard Awards. The default mechanism for proposals that don’t fit the consolidated, consortium, or new-applicant criteria — typically shorter, project-scale awards running up to three years.
- New Applicant Awards. A bridging mechanism for newly appointed academic staff who have just joined a department, letting them secure STFC funding before the next standard submission cycle rather than waiting for the full cycle to come round.
- Large Awards. Support programmatic, large-scale projects tackling major research questions or technology development within STFC’s astronomy remit, normally awarded for up to five years. This scheme has been paused pending the outcome of government spending reviews at points in recent years, so administrators should check current status on ukri.org before assuming it is open.
Outside these core research-grant mechanisms, STFC also funds PATT travel grants (Peer Allocation Time Panel travel grants, supporting UK astronomers’ travel to use observing time already allocated on major telescopes), and, like other UKRI councils, runs its own public-engagement scheme — STFC’s is branded Spark grants — funding public engagement specifically with STFC-supported science such as astronomy, particle physics, and space science.
Doctoral and studentship funding

Full economic costing and applying through the UKRI Funding Service
Like every other UKRI research council, STFC costs and funds research grants on a full economic costing (fEC) basis, using the Transparent Approach to Costing (TRAC) methodology UKRI validates for use across UK higher education. STFC funds 80% of a project’s agreed fEC, with the host institution expected to find the remaining 20% from its own resources — this is a UKRI-wide rule, not an STFC-specific one, so the same 80/20 split applies whether a proposal goes to STFC, EPSRC, or any other council. What this means in practice for research administrators
- Check which mechanism actually fits before drafting a proposal. STFC’s award types are more differentiated by department history and submission cycle than most councils’ — a department that already holds a Consolidated Award generally cannot also submit a competing Standard Award bid in the same research area in the same round, so confirm eligibility against the current guidance before committing staff time to a draft.
- Facility access and subscription-funded access are not grant applications. Time on ISIS, Diamond Light Source, DiRAC, or facilities reached through STFC’s CERN and ESO subscriptions is typically allocated through separate peer-reviewed access/beamtime processes, not through the Consolidated/Standard/Consortium grant mechanisms covered above — budget administrative time for both routes separately if a project needs both grant funding and facility access.
- Budget at 100% fEC, plan for an 80% award. Any STFC costing should build in the institution’s 20% contribution from the outset, the same as for any other UKRI council grant.
