A nitrile glove is a disposable hand glove made from nitrile butadiene rubber (NBR), a synthetic polymer manufactured to substitute for natural rubber latex. What Makes a Glove “Nitrile”
Nitrile butadiene rubber is a copolymer of acrylonitrile and butadiene. Manufacturers dip a hand-shaped mold (a “former”) into liquid NBR latex compound, cure it, and strip off a thin, close-fitting glove — the same basic dipped-glove process used for natural rubber latex and vinyl gloves, just with a different base polymer. The result is a stretchy, form-fitting glove that is not made from natural rubber at all, even though it looks and handles similarly to a latex glove.
The defining practical properties of nitrile as a glove material are:
- Latex-free. Nitrile contains no natural rubber latex proteins, so it does not trigger Type I latex allergy reactions the way natural rubber gloves can. This is the single biggest reason healthcare and lab settings shifted toward nitrile over the past two decades.
- Puncture and abrasion resistance. Nitrile is generally more resistant to punctures and tears than latex or vinyl at a comparable thickness, which matters in settings with sharps, glassware, or rough surfaces.
- Chemical resistance. Nitrile resists a broad range of oils, solvents, and chemicals better than latex or vinyl, though resistance varies significantly by specific chemical and by glove thickness — a general-purpose exam glove and a thick chemical-handling nitrile glove are not interchangeable for chemical work.
- Better fit retention. Unlike vinyl, nitrile keeps its elasticity and molds to the hand over a full shift rather than becoming loose or baggy.
Why Nitrile Gloves Exist
Nitrile gloves were developed as a direct response to two problems with the gloves that preceded them. Natural rubber latex gloves, long the default in medicine, cause allergic reactions in a meaningful share of both patients and healthcare workers — ranging from contact dermatitis to, in less common but serious cases, anaphylaxis — after repeated occupational exposure. Vinyl gloves, the original latex-free alternative, are cheaper but looser-fitting, less puncture-resistant, and offer weaker chemical protection. Nitrile closed that gap: it delivers latex-like fit and dexterity without the allergy risk, and generally outperforms vinyl on durability and chemical resistance. That combination is why nitrile has become the default glove material across most of healthcare, laboratory work, food service, and industrial handling.
Who Uses Nitrile Gloves
Nitrile gloves are used anywhere a barrier is needed between hands and a patient, sample, surface, or substance. In practice that spans several distinct grades and audiences:
- Clinical and patient-care settings — exam rooms, hospitals, and clinics use medical-grade exam gloves for patient contact, specimen handling, and routine infection control.
- Research and diagnostic labs — bench scientists and lab technicians use nitrile gloves for general sample handling and as one layer of chemical-splash protection, alongside other lab PPE.
- Industrial and food-service settings — thicker, general-purpose nitrile gloves are used wherever a durable, non-latex barrier glove is needed, independent of any medical claim.
These are not the same product. A glove intended for patient examination is manufactured and tested differently from an industrial or food-service glove sold under the same “nitrile glove” name — the material is shared, but the grade, testing, and regulatory status are not. At a general level: latex offers the best natural elasticity and tactile sensitivity but carries allergy risk and comparatively weaker chemical resistance. Vinyl is the lowest-cost option and latex-free, but fits loosely, tears more easily, and offers the least chemical protection of the three. Nitrile sits between them on cost, generally exceeds both on puncture resistance and chemical resistance, and — because it is latex-free — has become the default choice where allergy risk is a concern. For a research-administration or procurement audience, the material distinction matters less as chemistry trivia and more as a specification and budgeting question. “Nitrile gloves” on a standing order is not a complete specification — grade (exam vs. general-purpose vs. chemotherapy-rated), thickness, and applicable standard all affect both cost and whether the glove is fit for the intended use.
