Wikidata is a free, structured, collaboratively edited knowledge base operated by the Wikimedia Foundation. Every item in it — a person, an organization, a journal, a research grant, a scholarly work — gets a permanent identifier called a QID (the letter Q followed by a number, e.g. Q905). For research administrators already tracking ORCID iDs, ROR IDs, and ISNI, Wikidata can look at first glance like a fifth identifier scheme to reconcile. That framing undersells what it actually is: Wikidata does not compete with ORCID, ROR, or ISNI as an authoritative registry for any single entity type. Instead it functions as an open, general-purpose linking layer that stores those identifiers alongside each other on a shared item, and connects them to dozens of other schemes an authoritative registry would never track. What makes Wikidata structurally different from ORCID, ROR, and ISNI
ORCID, ROR, and ISNI are each authoritative registries with a narrow, defined scope: ORCID issues and curates identifiers for individual researchers and contributors; ROR issues and curates identifiers for research organizations; ISNI issues and curates identifiers across a broader set of public identities (people and organizations, including many outside research). Each has a formal registration process, an owning body responsible for record accuracy, and a defined data model scoped to its purpose.
Wikidata is none of those things in the same sense. It has no registration process, no single owning body vouching for any individual record’s accuracy, and no scope restriction — a Wikidata item can describe a researcher, a university, a journal, a chemical compound, a fictional character, or a grant, all inside the same open data model. Anyone can create or edit a Wikidata item, subject to the community’s sourcing and notability norms; there is no equivalent of ORCID’s user-controlled record or ROR’s curation team reviewing submissions. The data is released under a CC0 public-domain dedication, queryable in bulk through the Wikidata Query Service (a public SPARQL endpoint), and downloadable as full dumps — there is no licensing friction and no API key requirement, which is a genuinely different access model from ISNI’s registration-agency structure or Ringgold’s commercial licensing.

How QIDs actually link to ORCID, ROR, and ISNI
The linking mechanism is Wikidata’s property system. Every statement on a Wikidata item uses a property (a P-number) to say what kind of fact it is. A handful of properties exist specifically to record another identifier scheme’s value for the same real-world entity — these are called external-identifier properties, and they are what makes Wikidata function as a hub rather than a closed system. Verified directly against Wikidata’s own property pages:
- ORCID iD — property P496. A researcher’s Wikidata item can carry a P496 statement holding their 16-digit ORCID iD, letting any SPARQL query jump from a QID to the corresponding ORCID record.
- ROR ID — property P6782. An organization’s Wikidata item can carry its ROR ID the same way. Notably, this relationship runs in both directions in practice: ROR’s own
external_idsschema (covered in the ROR/ISNI/Ringgold/GRID crosswalk guide) includes Wikidata as one of its four formally supported external-identifier types, so a well-populated ROR record and a well-populated Wikidata item can each point at the other. - ISNI — property P213. Wikidata items for people and organizations can carry their ISNI value as a statement, enabling the same kind of cross-lookup.
Because a single Wikidata item can hold ORCID, ROR, ISNI, VIAF, GND, and many other identifiers as parallel statements on the same entity, querying the Wikidata Query Service is one of the few ways to resolve several identifier schemes for the same person or organization in a single request — without needing pairwise crosswalk logic between each pair of systems individually. That is the genuinely distinct value: not that Wikidata is more authoritative than ORCID or ROR for their respective scopes (it isn’t, and doesn’t claim to be), but that it is the most complete free, queryable convergence point where many separately governed identifier schemes co-occur on the same record.
WikiCite and Scholia: the tooling built on this role
WikiCite is the long-running Wikimedia initiative focused specifically on building out bibliographic and scholarly metadata inside Wikidata — adding structured records for publications, their authors, and the identifiers that connect them, so that citations on Wikipedia and elsewhere can be substantiated with linked, queryable data rather than free-text references. Tooling has grown up around this effort: Scholia is a community-maintained tool that generates on-the-fly scholarly profile pages — for individual researchers, organizations, journals, and research topics — by querying the Wikidata Query Service live, rendering publication lists, co-author networks, and citation graphs directly from whatever ORCID-, ROR-, and work-level statements exist on the relevant Wikidata items. Author-disambiguation and record-enrichment tools such as ORCIDator have also been built specifically to pull public ORCID profile data into Wikidata items, reinforcing the P496 linkage at scale rather than relying on manual entry.
Institutional Wikidata-import activity: what’s real, and what to verify locally
A number of university libraries and GLAM-sector institutions (galleries, libraries, archives, museums) have run structured projects — sometimes framed as “Wikidatathons” or institutional metadata-enrichment initiatives — to add or enrich Wikidata items for their researchers and outputs, typically linking existing ORCID iDs and ROR-identified affiliations into Wikidata via the properties above. The scale and cadence of any specific institution’s import work varies and changes over time, so this guide deliberately does not cite specific project names, participant counts, or record totals as current facts — verify any particular institution’s Wikidata activity against that institution’s own library or research-information-office documentation, or against the Wikidata:WikiProject Source MetaData page, rather than treating a claim here as authoritative. The durable, verifiable fact is the mechanism itself: because Wikidata is open-edit and uses standard external-identifier properties, this kind of institutional enrichment work is possible without needing an API partnership or licensing agreement with Wikidata — which is not true of every identifier registry.
What this means for a research-administration workflow
- Use Wikidata for discovery and cross-referencing, not as a system of record. If you need to resolve an ORCID iD to a ROR ID and an ISNI value for the same researcher’s institutional history in one query, the Wikidata Query Service can do that more directly than pairwise lookups across three separate APIs. But the underlying ORCID, ROR, and ISNI records remain the authoritative source for their respective scopes — a CRIS or compliance system should still resolve against those registries directly, not treat a Wikidata statement as the primary evidence.
- Treat any single Wikidata statement as provisional until sourced. Because any editor can add or change a statement, and coverage is uneven across institutions and disciplines, a missing or incorrect QID linkage is not evidence that the underlying ORCID or ROR record is wrong — only that nobody has added the cross-reference yet, or that it needs correction.
- QIDs are useful where no authoritative registry exists yet. Many entity types research administrators care about — specific grants, individual datasets, non-ROR-registered organizations, historical institutional names — may have a Wikidata item well before (or instead of) a purpose-built registry entry, simply because Wikidata’s scope is unrestricted.
Frequently asked questions
Does a QID replace the need for an ORCID iD or ROR ID?
No. A QID is a general-purpose Wikidata item identifier; it does not carry ORCID’s identity-verification model or ROR’s organizational curation process. Funders, publishers, and CRIS platforms that require ORCID or ROR compliance will not accept a QID as a substitute.
Is Wikidata data reliable enough to cite in a compliance or reporting context?
