A newly described beetle genus from the mountains of southern China and northern Laos has been named Luffy, after the elastic-limbed protagonist of the manga and anime series One Piece — and the paper describing it landed, like nearly all taxonomic description in this field now does, in a fully open-access, CC BY-licensed journal available to anyone without a subscription.
The species
Writing in ZooKeys (Pensoft Publishers) on 3 August 2026, Fang-Shuo Hu — a PhD student at the Natural History Museum of Denmark — and co-author Alexey Solodovnikov described a new rove beetle genus distinguished by exceptionally long, slender mandibles, antennae, and maxillary palps, features the authors say recalled the stretching powers of Monkey D. Luffy, the One Piece character whose Gear 5 transformation lends its name to one of the two new species. Luffy schillhammeri, found in broadleaf forest in China’s Yunnan Province, honors Harald Schillhammer of the Natural History Museum Vienna. Luffy nika, collected in Louang Namtha Province in northern Laos, is named for Luffy’s “Nika” Gear 5 form and reportedly displays prominent white bands of hair across its elytra, echoing that transformation’s visual motif.
An open-access, cross-border description
The paper (Hu & Solodovnikov, 2026, ZooKeys 1281: 247, DOI: 10.3897/zookeys.1281.198593) is a small, clean example of how routine cross-border taxonomic collaboration now runs. The authorship spans two institutions in two countries — the Natural History Museum of Denmark and the Natural History Museum Vienna — describing specimens collected in a third and fourth (China and Laos). ZooKeys, like the rest of the Pensoft journal portfolio, publishes under a CC BY 4.0 license by default: the full text, figures, and species descriptions are freely reusable with attribution from the moment of publication, no embargo and no paywall, which is part of why taxonomic literature in entomology has largely standardized on open-access venues over the past decade.
Why the naming works
Naming new taxa after pop-culture figures is a long-standing, deliberately playful convention in taxonomy — it is memorable, and it draws public attention to a discipline (systematics) that is chronically under-resourced relative to the pace at which new species are being flagged by modern methods like DNA barcoding (see, for instance, Ecuador’s Chocó Andino barcoding survey, which flagged over 8,000 candidate species in a single reserve). A striking common name and a fast, no-cost publication route are both, in their own way, tools for getting new species formally described and into the public scientific record before the backlog grows further.
