Can a journal have a high CiteScore but a low Journal Impact Factor, or vice versa?+
Yes, routinely. Because CiteScore uses a longer four-year citation window and a broader set of citable document types than JIF's two-year, articles-and-reviews-only window, the two metrics can diverge meaningfully for the same journal — that's expected, not an error in either database.
Is CiteScore the same as SJR or SNIP?+
No. CiteScore, SJR (SCImago Journal Rank), and SNIP (Source-Normalized Impact per Paper) are all computed from Scopus data but use different formulas — CiteScore is a direct citation-to-document ratio, SJR applies PageRank-style prestige weighting, and SNIP normalizes for field-level citation behavior.
Which metric should I report in a tenure or grant application?+
Check what the specific funder, journal, or promotion committee actually asks for — many biomedical and North American contexts still default to JIF, while CiteScore is increasingly referenced elsewhere. Per DORA, neither should be used as a stand-in for the quality of an individual article or researcher regardless of which is requested.
Do CiteScore and JIF quartiles for the same journal always match?+
No. Quartiles are built from different subject-category schemes (Elsevier's ASJC for CiteScore vs Web of Science categories for JIF) on top of the different underlying metric, so a journal can rank Q1 in one system and Q2 or lower in the other.
