Editorial commentary
Climate impact statements are emerging as a standard companion to data management, ethics, and EDI statements. They typically estimate scope 2 and scope 3 emissions over the project lifetime, identify the largest contributors, and commit to mitigation actions (e.g., low-carbon HPC region, reduced travel). Some funders (Wellcome, UKRI partners) require the statement be revisited annually as part of mid-year reporting. The Wellcome environmental sustainability policy (2023) provides a reference template. Climate impact statements complement, rather than replace, scientific case content.
