Examples

Worked examples

  • Is an instance

A neuroscience PI submits an IACUC protocol detailing the use of 120 mice for an optogenetics study, including surgical procedures, analgesia regimen, and humane endpoints, and may not order animals until the protocol is approved.

  • Is an instance

An IACUC requires a researcher to consult the attending veterinarian and revise the post-surgical pain-management plan before granting approval.

Counter-examples

Looks similar, but isn't

  • Not an instance

Research using only invertebrate species (excluding cephalopods in jurisdictions covering them) generally falls outside US IACUC jurisdiction.

  • Not an instance

Use of commercially purchased tissue from previously euthanised animals where no live-animal work is performed by the institution does not require IACUC protocol approval.

Editorial commentary

The IACUC oversees the institution's animal-care and use program through protocol review, semi-annual program reviews, semi-annual facility inspections, post-approval monitoring, investigation of concerns, and reporting to the Institutional Official. Membership must include a veterinarian with training in laboratory-animal medicine, a practicing scientist experienced with animal research, a non-scientist, and a non-affiliated member. The committee evaluates the scientific justification, the consideration of alternatives to painful procedures (the Three Rs: replacement, reduction, refinement), the species and number rationale, and humane endpoints.
