Editorial commentary

Matauranga Maori is a holistic and relational knowledge system grounded in tikanga (customary practice) and te reo Maori (the Maori language). Its custodianship rests with Maori communities, hapu, and iwi, and its appropriate use is governed by tikanga and by the relationships through which knowledge is shared. In research contexts, engagement with matauranga Maori requires recognition of Maori authority and benefit, and is closely connected with Maori Data Sovereignty and the broader CARE framework. The term is used here in a general descriptive sense; specific community knowledge belongs to the relevant communities.
