Editorial commentary

Cultural protocols are community-specific and may govern matters such as appropriate forms of greeting, permission to enter places, the handling of sacred or sensitive materials, language use, gendered considerations, and the circumstances under which knowledge can be shared. In research contexts, adherence to cultural protocols is foundational to ethical engagement and is closely connected with FPIC, community-controlled research, and benefit-sharing arrangements. Cultural protocols are defined by the community, not by external parties.
