The Association for Information Science and Technology (ASIS&T) is an international society for people who study and practise information science. Its own website describes nearly 85 years of work on new and better theories of information, and it serves practitioners, researchers and academics, and students. For wider context, see our guides on what is information science and what is library science.
What it is
ASIS&T is a membership association built around information science. It publishes a scholarly journal, produces conference proceedings, runs an annual meeting, and hosts special interest groups that meet in person and online. It also supports student chapters and regional chapters for career development and leadership opportunities.
Who runs it and what it covers
The society’s website lists a Board of Directors and a page of past presidents. Its subject range includes information retrieval, metadata standards such as Dublin Core, metrics, and digital libraries; the special interest groups are the best guide to current topics.
Its main publications, as described on the ASIS&T publications page:
- Journal of the Association for Information Science and Technology (JASIST): a scholarly journal devoted to documentation and information science. Access is through individual ASIS&T membership or an organizational site license provided by Wiley.
- Information Matters (IM): a digital-only, free-of-charge translational forum for information science aimed at a global public audience.
- Annual Meeting Proceedings: full text, images and presentations from past annual meetings.
- Inside ASIS&T: the bi-monthly newsletter of the association.
- Annual Review of Information Science and Technology (ARIST): the digital library includes volumes 36 to 39 (2002 to 2005).
How to search or use it
Publications are found through the Publications section of the ASIS&T website (asist.org), where the digital library gathers JASIST, the Annual Meeting Proceedings and ARIST volumes. Members have access to the Digital Library, and organizations can use a site license. Meetings and past annual meetings are listed under Meetings & Events on the same site, and the special interest groups are described on the Membership pages. Where your work touches authorship conventions, our entry on first author and guide to research objectives may help.
Strengths and limits
- Focused community: special interest groups meet both in person and online.
- Open content: Information Matters is free of charge.
- Access limits: JASIST access depends on individual membership or an institutional license.
