A practical guide to legitimate citation-visibility techniques for researchers: green open access self-archiving, preprint deposit, ORCID and DOI metadata hygiene, discoverable titles and abstracts, and academic network sharing — with a clear line drawn against citation manipulation.

Getting cited starts with getting found. Citation counts track how often other researchers discover, read, and build on a piece of work — and discovery increasingly runs through a small set of channels: Google Scholar and other citation databases, institutional and subject repositories, preprint servers, persistent identifiers, and researchers’ own professional networks. This guide covers the legitimate discoverability practices that make a publication easier to find and cite. Make the work legally accessible wherever it can be found

A paywalled article can only be cited by readers with subscription access or who happen to find an open copy elsewhere. Studies of open-access citation advantage are mixed and discipline-dependent, but the mechanism is not in dispute: a freely readable version removes a real barrier between a search result and a citation. The most reliable way to do this without violating a publisher agreement is green open access — self-archiving a permitted version of the manuscript (typically the author’s accepted manuscript, sometimes after an embargo period) in an institutional or subject repository.

Before self-archiving anything, check what the publisher actually permits. Deposit a preprint where the field supports it

In fields with an established preprint culture — physics, mathematics, computer science, and increasingly biology, economics, and other disciplines — depositing a preprint on a recognized server (arXiv, bioRxiv, SSRN, and similar) puts the work in front of readers, and often in front of citation databases, months before formal publication. Get the identifier and metadata layer right

Discovery tools match a publication to a specific person and a specific record using persistent identifiers and consistent metadata — get either wrong and the citation-tracking systems undercount the work even when readers find and cite it correctly.

  • Use one consistent name form across every venue — journal bylines, preprint servers, conference programs, ORCID, and any institutional or Google Scholar profile. Name-matching algorithms are the weakest link in most discovery systems, and an inconsistent name form is one of the most common reasons legitimate work goes unmatched to an author’s record.
  • Make sure every publication resolves to a DOI, and that the DOI’s metadata (title, author list, affiliation, funder acknowledgment) is complete and accurate at the registration agency (Crossref for most journal articles, DataCite for datasets and other non-article outputs). Write titles and abstracts for discovery, not just for readers

Search and recommendation algorithms — in Google Scholar, subject databases, and citation-graph tools alike — weight title and abstract text heavily when matching a search query to a result. This is a discoverability practice, not a stylistic compromise: it means front-loading the actual subject-matter terms a reader would search for, rather than leading with a clever or allusive phrase that only makes sense after the paper is read. A title built entirely around a pun or a literary reference, with the substantive topic relegated to a subtitle after a colon, is harder for both algorithms and skimming readers to match to a search query than one that states the subject plainly. The same logic applies to the abstract: include the key terms, methods, and findings a searcher in the field would actually type, in addition to whatever discipline-specific terminology is expected.

Share through legitimate academic and professional channels

Once a version of the work is accessible and correctly identified, actively surfacing it in front of the right audience shortens the time to first citation:

  • Academic social networks such as ResearchGate and Academia.edu can extend reach, but only upload a version the publisher agreement actually permits (check the same Open Policy Finder record used for repository deposit) — these platforms are not exempt from copyright terms just because they are framed as academic.
  • Professional social media and research-community platforms (X/Twitter’s academic communities, Bluesky, LinkedIn, Mastodon’s academic instances) put new work in front of researchers who follow a subfield closely and are the most likely near-term citers.
  • Conference presentations and departmental/institutional communications (a university press release or research-office spotlight for genuinely notable findings) reach adjacent audiences that citation databases alone won’t surface.
  • Data and code sharing in a recognized repository, cited with its own persistent identifier per the Joint Declaration of Data Citation Principles, gives other researchers a second, independently citable object tied back to the original publication.

What to avoid

Discoverability and citation manipulation are not the same activity, and the line matters. Legitimate visibility work makes a real publication easier for genuinely interested readers to find; citation manipulation inflates a count without adding discoverability or value, and every major research-integrity body treats it as misconduct or, at minimum, a serious ethical lapse. Avoid:

  • Citation cartels — coordinated, reciprocal citation arrangements among a group of authors or journals designed to inflate citation counts or journal metrics rather than reflecting genuine scholarly relevance. See Citation Cartel.
