Editorial commentary

The Declaration was the culmination of work by the Force11 Data Citation Synthesis Group, which synthesised earlier statements from the National Academies (2012), DataCite, the CODATA-ICSTI Task Group on Data Citation, and others. Its eight principles became the de facto reference for data-citation policy in the years that followed and were operationalised in subsequent work (the FAIR Principles, journal data-citation requirements, repository landing-page best practice).
