A practical guide to the taxonomy of journal article types — original research, review, case report, brief communication, letter, commentary, editorial, correction, and Registered Report — and why the choice affects peer review, indexing, and citation metrics.

Every journal submission system asks authors to select an “article type” before anything else — original research, review, case report, letter, and so on. This choice is not a formality. It determines which peer-review track a manuscript enters, which formatting and length rules apply, whether it is indexed the same way as a full research article, and in some cases whether it is eligible for a DOI, a Crossref “funding” or “clinical trial” registration link, or inclusion in citation counts at all. Choosing the wrong article type is one of the more common reasons a manuscript is desk-rejected or sent back for reclassification before review even begins.

This guide covers the article types that recur across most journals and disciplines, the practical differences between them, and why the choice matters operationally — for authors, for research administrators supporting submission, and for anyone trying to understand why a given piece appears (or doesn’t appear) in a particular index or citation count.

Why article type is not just a label

Article type affects several things downstream of the label itself:

  • Peer-review track. Most journals route different article types to different review processes — a full external review for original research, a lighter or editor-only review for a letter or editorial, specialist review for a case report.
  • Length, structure, and formatting rules. Journals typically publish separate word-count and structural requirements (e.g., structured abstract required vs. not, IMRaD structure required vs. not) for each article type in their author guidelines.
  • Indexing and discoverability. Bibliographic databases and citation indexes classify content by type, and some types (editorials, letters, corrections) are commonly excluded from citation-based metrics such as an author’s h-index or a journal’s calculated impact factor, even though the article itself is indexed and citable.

The core taxonomy

There is no single universal standard that fixes these categories — definitions vary by journal, publisher, and discipline, and the same label can mean somewhat different things in different fields (a “brief communication” in one journal may map to what another calls a “short report” or “rapid communication”). The following are the types that recur, with variation, across most STM and social-science journals.

Original research article (research article / full paper)

The default, most substantial article type: a complete report of a novel study, including its own methods, results, discussion, and (typically) a structured or semi-structured abstract following an IMRaD-style structure (Introduction, Methods, Results, and Discussion). This is what most people mean by “a paper” and is the type most consistently counted in citation metrics and journal impact-factor calculations.

Review article

A synthesis of existing literature on a topic rather than a report of new primary data. Reviews range from narrative reviews (author’s synthesis and interpretation, without a predefined search protocol) to formal, protocol-driven systematic and scoping reviews, which follow reporting guidelines such as PRISMA and are typically registered in advance. Journals often distinguish these explicitly in their submission systems because the review burden and required documentation differ sharply between an invited narrative review and a full systematic review with a registered protocol.

Case report / case study

A detailed account of a single patient, subject, or unusual instance — most common in clinical and biomedical fields, though case studies also appear in other applied disciplines. Case reports typically follow a specific reporting guideline (in clinical medicine, most commonly CARE) and are valued for documenting rare presentations, unexpected treatment outcomes, or diagnostic puzzles that wouldn’t generate a large enough sample for a conventional study. Many journals cap case reports at a short word limit and require patient consent documentation.

Brief communication / short report / rapid communication

A condensed original-research report, used when findings are novel and time-sensitive or self-contained enough not to need the full length of a standard research article. Naming and exact requirements vary by journal — some use “brief communication” and “rapid communication” interchangeably, others distinguish them by review speed rather than length.

Letter to the editor

Typically a short piece responding to a previously published article, raising a methodological concern, offering an alternative interpretation, or contributing a brief observation. Letters commonly go through abbreviated or editor-only review, have tight word limits (often under 500-1,000 words), and in many journals do not require a structured abstract. Letters are frequently excluded from citable-item counts used in impact-factor calculations even when they carry their own DOI and appear in the journal’s table of contents.

Commentary / perspective / opinion

An argued piece expressing a viewpoint on a topic, policy, or recently published finding, generally without new primary data of its own. Journals vary in how they distinguish “commentary” (often tied to a specific article or event) from “perspective” (broader field-level argument) — check the specific journal’s author guidelines rather than assuming a shared definition across publishers.

Editorial

Typically written or commissioned by the journal’s own editors, addressing the journal’s direction, a theme issue, or an editorial policy change. Editorials are usually not externally peer-reviewed in the same way as submitted content, since they represent the editorial team’s own position.

Correction, erratum, and retraction

Post-publication article types that amend or withdraw the scholarly record. A correction or erratum addresses an error that doesn’t undermine the work’s overall validity; a retraction withdraws the work entirely, typically for reasons involving research misconduct, invalidated results, or unresolved ethical problems, per guidance from bodies such as the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE). These are always formally linked to the original article’s metadata and DOI so the correction is discoverable alongside the record it amends.

Registered Report

A structured alternative in which the introduction, methods, and analysis plan are submitted and peer-reviewed before data collection or before results are known; the journal grants in-principle acceptance based on the question and design rather than the results. This format, championed by the Center for Open Science, is intended to reduce publication bias toward positive or novel findings.

Protocol

A published, often peer-reviewed description of a planned study’s design and methods, submitted before the study is conducted — common for clinical trials and for systematic reviews (a “protocol” article preceding the eventual review). Protocol publication supports transparency and lets other researchers see planned methodology in advance.

How to choose the right article type

  1. Read the specific journal’s author guidelines first. Definitions and word limits for the same-named article type vary meaningfully across journals and publishers — never assume a category means the same thing everywhere.
  2. Match the type to what the manuscript actually is, not to which type has the fastest review or the most prestige. A brief, single-case finding submitted as “original research” to fit a longer format is a common cause of reviewer pushback or requested reclassification.
  3. Check indexing and metric consequences if citation count matters to the author (e.g., for tenure or grant reporting) — confirm whether the chosen type is counted as a “citable item” by the journal’s indexing databases.
  4. Confirm any required reporting guideline tied to the type — PRISMA for systematic reviews, CONSORT for randomized trials, CARE for case reports — since many journals now require these as a submission condition rather than a recommendation.
  5. When in doubt, ask the editorial office before submission; most journals will informally advise on the appropriate type rather than have a manuscript rejected on a technicality after full review.

Does article type affect whether a paper counts toward a journal’s impact factor?

Often, yes. Many citation databases distinguish “citable” article types (original research, reviews) from types commonly excluded from the citable-item denominator used in impact-factor calculations (letters, editorials, corrections, news items) — even though all types remain individually citable and indexed. The exact rules depend on the indexing database, not the journal itself.

Can a journal reclassify a submission’s article type?

Is there one universal list of article types every journal uses?
