In research, the rationale of a study is the argument for why the study needs to exist: it names a gap in current knowledge or practice, explains why that gap matters, and states what the study will do to close it. A rationale is not a restatement of the topic (“this study looks at X”) and it is not a list of the researcher’s personal interests — it is a reasoned case, built on evidence from the existing literature, that this particular question is worth the time, money, and participant burden it will cost to answer.
This guide covers both ends of that argument. The rationale opens a study by justifying why it needs to happen; the discussion section’s implications close it by explaining what the findings actually mean once the study is done. They are structurally mirror images of each other, and a weakness in one often signals a weakness in the other — a study whose rationale overpromises tends to produce a discussion that overstates its implications to match.
What a rationale is, and what it isn’t
A rationale answers three linked questions in sequence:
- What is already known? — the established territory, summarized from the literature.
- What is missing, wrong, or untested? — the gap, stated precisely enough that a reader could recognize it if they saw it filled.
- Why does filling it matter, and why now? — the significance: the theoretical, clinical, practical, or policy consequence of leaving the gap unaddressed.
A rationale is not the same thing as a research question or a hypothesis — those state what will be asked or predicted; the rationale is the argument for why that question is the right one to ask. It is also not a literature review in miniature: a literature review surveys a body of work; a rationale uses a targeted slice of that same literature in service of a single argumentative claim, that this specific gap exists and matters.
Where a rationale appears, and how its emphasis shifts
The same underlying argument gets written differently depending on where it appears, because each audience is evaluating it against different criteria:
- A journal article’s introduction. The rationale is the final movement of the introduction, arriving after the territory has been established and immediately before the study’s aims or hypotheses are stated. Readers here are peers who already know the field; the rationale can move quickly and assume shared context.
- A grant application’s significance section. A funder is evaluating impact and feasibility as much as novelty — the rationale has to make the case that the work is fundable now, given the resources requested, not only that the question is interesting. Significance sections typically also have to survive a reviewer who is not a narrow specialist in the exact sub-field.
- A study protocol. The rationale (often called “background and rationale”) has to justify the study to an ethics committee or institutional review board as well as to scientific reviewers — it needs to make the risk-benefit case, not just the knowledge-gap case, because the committee is also weighing participant burden against expected value.
- A thesis or dissertation proposal. A supervisory or examination committee is evaluating scholarly contribution and the candidate’s command of the field — the rationale here typically needs to demonstrate a more exhaustive command of prior work than a journal introduction does, because part of what’s being assessed is whether the candidate has correctly located their own contribution within it.
The underlying moves are the same across all four contexts; what changes is which move gets the most space and which risk (scientific, financial, ethical, or scholarly) the writer has to address most explicitly.
How to build a rationale
1. Establish the territory
Summarize what is reliably known, citing the strongest and most current evidence. This section exists to earn the reader’s agreement that you understand the field, not to list everything ever published on the topic — be selective and cite the work that most directly bears on the gap you’re about to name.
2. Identify the gap — and check that it is a real gap, not just an unstudied topic
This is the step most rationales get wrong. “Nobody has studied X” is not, by itself, a reason to study X. A gap is worth filling when at least one of the following is true:
- Existing findings conflict, and resolving the conflict would change practice or theory.
- A finding from one population, setting, or method hasn’t been tested elsewhere and there’s a specific reason to expect it might not generalize.
- A theoretical prediction has never been empirically tested.
- A practical or clinical decision is currently being made without the evidence it needs.
A topic can be genuinely unstudied and still not be worth studying — because it was tried and abandoned for good reason, because no plausible mechanism connects the variables, or because filling the gap wouldn’t change what anyone does or believes. A strong rationale distinguishes “nobody has looked” from “nobody has looked, and here is why that specifically matters.”
3. State what the study adds
Say precisely what this study contributes that the existing literature does not: a new population, a stronger design, a missing measurement, a direct test of a claim that has only been assumed. This is the sentence a reader should be able to lift out and use as the one-line justification for the whole study.
4. State the consequence of not doing it
Close the rationale by naming what stays unresolved, or what continues to happen, if the study isn’t done — a clinical decision made on weaker evidence, a policy built on an untested assumption, a theoretical debate that stays unresolved. This is what converts “interesting gap” into “gap worth the cost of closing,” and it’s the sentence a funder or committee is often looking for most directly.
The CARS model: a practical template
John Swales’ Create a Research Space (CARS) model, from his 1990 book Genre Analysis: English in Academic and Research Settings, describes the rationale-building move as a sequence of three “moves” and is one of the most widely taught frameworks for writing research introductions:
- Move 1 — Establishing a territory. Show the topic is important, well-established, or actively researched, and summarize what’s known.
- Move 2 — Establishing a niche. Indicate a gap, raise a question, or counter a claim in the existing work — this is where the rationale’s argumentative force lives.
- Move 3 — Occupying the niche. State the present study’s purpose, approach, and (often) its main findings or structure.
Used as a checklist, CARS is a fast way to diagnose a weak rationale: if a draft spends most of its length on Move 1 and rushes Move 2, the argument for why this study hasn’t actually been made yet, no matter how much background has been cited.
Weak vs. strong rationale: illustrative examples
The pairs below are illustrative composites written for this guide, not drawn from any real study, to show the difference in argumentative structure.
Example 1
Weak: “Remote patient monitoring is increasingly common, but little research has examined its use in rural clinics. This study will examine remote monitoring in a rural clinic setting.”
Why it’s weak: it names a topic and an absence of research, but never says why the rural setting would be expected to behave differently, or what decision currently rests on that missing evidence. “Little research” is not yet a gap — it’s just a description of the literature.
Strong: “Remote patient monitoring reduces hospital readmission in urban trial populations, but every trial to date has assumed reliable broadband connectivity and weekly in-person follow-up — conditions that do not hold in many rural clinics. Whether the same effect survives intermittent connectivity and monthly rather than weekly follow-up is untested, and rural health systems are currently adopting these programs on the assumption that urban trial results generalize. This study tests remote monitoring’s effect on readmission under the connectivity and staffing constraints typical of rural clinics.”
Why it’s stronger: it names the specific assumption the existing evidence rests on, explains why that assumption might not hold in the new setting, and states the real-world decision (rural health systems adopting the program now) that makes the gap consequential rather than merely interesting.
Example 2
Weak: “There is a gap in the literature regarding employee motivation in remote-first companies, and this is an important area to explore further.”
Why it’s weak: “important area to explore” asserts significance without arguing for it; a reader can’t tell what would be different if the study weren’t done.
Strong: “Established motivation frameworks assume regular co-located supervision as a mechanism for feedback and recognition, but remote-first companies structurally lack that mechanism, and no study has tested whether these frameworks still predict engagement once it is removed. Given that a growing share of firms now operate remote-first permanently, HR teams are applying these frameworks without evidence they still hold. This study tests whether [framework]’s core predictions replicate in a remote-first sample.”
Implications: the other end of the argument
If the rationale is the argument for why a study needs to exist, the implications are the argument for what its results actually mean once it’s finished — usually written in the closing part of the discussion section. The two are structurally paired: a rationale that promised to resolve a specific gap sets the bar the implications then have to either meet or honestly fall short of.
Implications are conventionally split into three kinds, and a thorough discussion addresses each one separately rather than blending them into a single closing paragraph:
- Implications for theory. Does the finding support, qualify, or contradict an existing theoretical model? Does it suggest a mechanism that wasn’t previously proposed?
- Implications for practice or policy. What, if anything, should a practitioner, clinician, or policymaker do differently in light of this result — and is the study’s design actually strong enough to license that recommendation?
- Implications for future research. What specific next question does this finding raise, and what design would be needed to answer it? “More research is needed” is not, on its own, an implication — a genuine one names what the next study should look like and why.
Implications must be proportionate to the design
The single most important discipline in writing implications is keeping their strength matched to what the study design can actually support. An observational, cross-sectional, or correlational study can describe an association and can reasonably suggest hypotheses for causal investigation — it cannot, on its own, license a causal claim or a specific policy recommendation that assumes causality. A single-site study cannot claim implications for a national or international population without qualification. A small pilot cannot claim the same generalizability as a well-powered confirmatory trial. Matching implication strength to design strength is not a matter of style; it’s a matter of what the evidence actually warrants.
Implications are not limitations
The two sections are often confused but do different work. Limitations describe what the study could not do or control for — its constraints. Implications describe what should follow from what it did find, given those constraints. A well-written discussion states the limitations first (or clearly cross-references them) and then writes implications that have already been discounted for them, rather than making a bold implications claim and only qualifying it afterward as an afterthought.
The integrity boundary: implications and spin
Overstating implications — describing findings as more definitive, more generalizable, or more causally certain than the study design supports — is one of the most common forms of spin in scientific writing: reporting practices that create an overly favorable or overly certain impression of results without actually falsifying data. Spin can appear in several forms in a discussion or implications section:
- Using causal language (“reduces,” “improves,” “prevents”) to describe results from a non-causal design.
- Generalizing a finding beyond the population, setting, or timeframe actually studied.
- Recommending a specific practice or policy change that the study wasn’t designed to test.
- Emphasizing a secondary or subgroup finding as if it were the study’s main, pre-specified result.
Because implications are the last thing many readers — including journalists, policymakers, and clinicians scanning for a takeaway — actually read closely, spin in this section has an outsized effect on how a study’s findings travel beyond the paper itself. Writing implications that are proportionate to the design isn’t just good academic style; it’s a direct safeguard against a study’s findings being used for more than the evidence supports.

What is the difference between a rationale and a hypothesis?

How long should a rationale be?
