IMRaD Structure

The four-part sectional structure -- Introduction, Methods, Results, and Discussion -- used to organize a manuscript reporting original empirical research. A paper qualifies as IMRaD-structured when: (1) the Introduction states the research question against existing background without previewing findings, (2) the Methods (or Materials and Methods) section describes the procedure in enough detail to permit assessment or replication and contains no findings, (3) the Results section reports what was found without interpreting it, and (4) the Discussion interprets those findings against the research question and prior literature. Content placed in the wrong section -- most commonly, interpretation appearing in Results instead of Discussion -- is a structural defect even when all four section headings are present.

    A peer-reviewed clinical trial report organized as Introduction (why the trial was run), Methods (design, participants, intervention, outcome measures), Results (participant flow and outcome data reported without interpretation), and Discussion (what the outcomes mean, how they compare to prior trials, and study limitations) is a textbook IMRaD paper -- the structure ICMJE's manuscript-preparation recommendations describe for original research.

Editorial commentary

IMRaD is the standard organizational structure for reporting original scientific research: Introduction, Methods, Results, and Discussion, in that order, as the four major body sections of a manuscript. The lowercase “a” in most style guides’ rendering of the acronym signals that “and” is a connector, not a fifth section. It is the default shape a peer reviewer, journal editor, or indexing database expects an empirical paper to take, and deviating from it without a stated reason is itself a signal worth explaining in a cover letter.

The International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE) states the rationale plainly in its manuscript-preparation recommendations: “The text of articles reporting original research is usually divided into Introduction, Methods, Results, and Discussion sections. This so-called ‘IMRAD’ structure is not an arbitrary publication format but a reflection of the process of scientific discovery.” That framing matters for how the structure should actually be used: each section corresponds to a distinct stage of the research process (why you started, what you did, what you found, what it means), and the most common drafting mistake is letting content from one stage leak into the wrong section.

What belongs in each section — and the most common misplacement

Introduction

Establishes the problem, situates it in the existing literature, and states the specific research question, hypothesis, or objective the study addresses. It moves from broad context to a narrow, testable aim — it does not preview findings. A common error is smuggling results (“we found that…”) into the Introduction to justify the study’s importance; that belongs in the Discussion, not as a forward-reference here.

Methods (or Materials and Methods)

Describes who or what was studied, what materials or instruments were used, and exactly how the work was carried out — with enough detail that another researcher could assess or replicate the procedure. Methods is procedural, written in the past tense, and contains no findings and no interpretation. The most frequent misplacement here is including a result inline while describing a procedure (e.g., “we measured X, which turned out to be higher than expected”) — the observation belongs in Results; only the procedure belongs in Methods.

Results

Reports what was found — the data, statistics, and observations produced by the methods just described — without explaining what those findings mean or how they compare to prior work. This is the single most common IMRaD misplacement mistake: authors routinely interpret findings in the Results section (“this suggests that…”, “this confirms…”, “this is consistent with prior work by…”). Interpretation, comparison to the literature, and implication belong exclusively in the Discussion. Results should read as a neutral, ordered account of what the data show, typically organized around the study’s tables and figures.

Discussion

Interprets the results: what they mean, how they answer the research question posed in the Introduction, how they relate to (support, contradict, or extend) existing literature, what the study’s limitations are, and what follow-up work they suggest. The Discussion is the only section where authors are expected to argue, compare, and speculate within reasonable bounds — that latitude does not extend backward into Results.

Origin and history

IMRaD was not designed as a single, dated invention — it consolidated gradually over the twentieth century as scientific publishing moved away from the narrative, chronological “letter” style common in earlier journals. A widely cited bibliometric study, Sollaci and Pereira’s “The Introduction, Methods, Results, and Discussion (IMRAD) structure: a fifty-year survey” (Journal of the Medical Library Association, 2004), traced its adoption directly: essentially no sampled articles used the structure before 1935, it began appearing through the 1940s, and it was firmly established as the dominant format — especially in physics and medical journals — by the 1970s and 1980s.

The format was also formally codified by the American National Standards Institute: ANSI Z39.16, “Preparation of Scientific Papers for Written or Oral Presentation” (published 1979, reaffirmed 1985), gave IMRaD-style organization the status of a national standard for a period. That specific standard was later administratively withdrawn and is no longer current, but the practice it documented had already become self-sustaining through journal style guides and editorial convention — the ICMJE recommendations (used by thousands of biomedical journals) and discipline-specific manuals such as the APA Publication Manual are what actually enforce IMRaD-shaped structure on authors today, not a live ANSI standard.

Variations: AIMRaD, structured abstracts, and field-specific deviations

AIMRaD

Some style guides and authors write “AIMRaD” instead of “IMRaD” specifically to give the Abstract formal, first-class status in the acronym, rather than treating it as a pre-Introduction summary that sits outside the core four sections. The content expectation is the same either way: a structured or unstructured abstract that concisely restates the paper’s purpose, methods, principal results, and conclusion, positioned before the Introduction. Naming and heading variants

The core four-part logic is stable, but journals vary the section labels: “Materials and Methods” is common in the life sciences; the APA Publication Manual uses the singular “Method”; some journals add a fifth labeled “Conclusion” after the Discussion for a short closing summary (occasionally rendered as the variant “IaMRDC” in the literature — Introduction with aim, Materials and Methods, Results, Discussion, Conclusion). Multi-experiment papers sometimes repeat Methods/Results pairs under separate study headings, then close with one combined general Discussion — the APA manual explicitly permits either a “Results and Discussion” combined heading per study or fully separated sections, provided a single comprehensive Discussion still closes the paper.

Where IMRaD does not apply

IMRaD describes the structure of original empirical research reporting new data. It is not the expected structure for a narrative literature review, a theoretical/conceptual paper, most humanities argument essays, or a case report organized around a clinical timeline — these genres are typically organized thematically or chronologically instead. A systematic review or meta-analysis uses a related but distinct structure (commonly governed by PRISMA reporting guidelines) rather than a plain IMRaD frame, since its “Methods” describes a search-and-screening protocol rather than an experiment.
