Minitab is statistical software that its maker describes as “Statistical Software for Quality and Process Improvement”. It is used to examine current and past data to find trends, patterns and relationships between variables, and in research it is most often used for basic hypothesis tests, regression, designed experiments, control charts and measurement-system studies. This guide lists those uses, walks through one worked two-sample t test with the menu names from Minitab’s documentation, and shows how to read the result.
What it is used for in research
The Minitab product page groups its statistics into areas. In plain terms, they map to research tasks like this:
- Comparing groups and testing hypotheses. t tests, one- and two-proportion tests, normality tests, chi-square tests and equivalence tests. The 2-sample t test below is the standard example. For the reasoning behind these tests, see what a p-value is.
- Relationships between variables. Regression, nonlinear regression, correlation, cluster analysis and ARIMA time series forecasting.
- Designed experiments. Screening designs, full and fractional factorial, response surface, mixture and Taguchi designs. For the method itself, see design of experiments (DOE).
- Measurement systems and process capability. Measurement systems analysis (gage studies, attribute agreement), capability analysis including Capability Sixpack, acceptance sampling and tolerance intervals.
- Control charts. Variable, attribute, multivariate, time-weighted and rare-event charts.
- Reliability. Distribution analysis (for example Weibull and censored data), test plans, accelerated life tests, warranty analysis and repairable systems.
- Predictive analytics. A Predictive Analytics Module with R and Python integration and methods such as CART, TreeNet and Random Forests.
- Graphs. Graph Builder lets you switch interactively among bar charts, correlograms and heat maps; boxplots are also listed.
The emphasis is quality, process and engineering data. For general-purpose research statistics, free tools cover much of the same ground; see the alternatives section below.
Install or access (official source only)
Minitab is obtained from the maker’s own product page, minitab.com/en-us/products/minitab. The page describes Minitab as available on the desktop or in the cloud, with optional modules: Predictive Analytics, Healthcare, Reliability, Sample Size, Supply Chain and Transportation. Choose the delivery form and modules on that page.
Step-by-step task: a two-sample t test
This follows Minitab’s own worked example, which compares patient ratings of two hospitals and uses the sample dataset HospitalComparison.MWX.
- Open the sample dataset HospitalComparison.MWX.
- Choose Stat > Basic Statistics > 2-Sample t.
- In the drop-down list, choose Both samples are in one column.
- In Samples, enter Rating.
- In Sample IDs, enter Hospital.
- Click OK.

Output and how to read it
In the official example the p-value is 0.000 and the estimated difference (Hospital A minus Hospital B) is 21.00 with a 95% confidence interval of 14.23 to 27.77. Read the output in this order, following Minitab’s key-results guidance:
- The difference and its confidence interval. The interval is a range of likely values for the population difference. Use subject knowledge to decide whether any value in it is large enough to matter in practice.
- The p-value against your significance level. If you do not specify a hypothesized difference, Minitab tests whether there is no difference between the means, so the hypothesized difference is 0. If the p-value is less than or equal to the significance level (commonly 0.05), the decision is to reject the null hypothesis. In the example, 0.000 is below 0.05, so the two hospitals’ ratings differ. If the p-value is higher, you lack enough evidence to call the difference statistically significant, and you should check that the test has enough power to detect a difference that matters.
- The graphs. Use boxplots or histograms to check each sample for skewness and potential outliers.
A p-value is statistical evidence only; whether a difference is practically significant is a judgement from your field. Source: Minitab Support, 2-Sample t key results, checked 2026-10-29. If your data are clearly not normal, see parametric vs non-parametric tests.
Troubleshooting
- Skewed data with small samples. Minitab’s documentation states that severely skewed data can affect the validity of the p-value if your samples are small, which it defines as either sample having fewer than 15 values. If so, consider a larger sample.
- Outliers. Outliers appear as asterisks on a boxplot. Look for causes such as data-entry or measurement errors, and consider removing abnormal one-time events before rerunning the analysis.
- A result that is not significant. Check whether the test had enough power to detect a practically significant difference.
Free alternatives
CASRAI’s guide to free statistical software for research covers tools that can be used without a licence fee. Three of them describe themselves as follows:
| Tool | How its own site describes it |
|---|---|
| R | “a free software environment for statistical computing and graphics” |
| jamovi | “a free and open statistical spreadsheet, designed to be easy to use” |
| JASP | “a free cross-platform software program with a state-of-the-art graphical user interface”; offers standard procedures “in both their classical and Bayesian form” |
For a closer look at one point-and-click option, see JASP; for another package comparison, see SPSS vs R.
FAQ
What is Minitab used for?
Minitab is used to analyse data for trends, patterns and relationships: hypothesis tests, regression, designed experiments, control charts, measurement-system and capability studies, and reliability analysis.
Is Minitab only for Six Sigma and quality work?
Its maker positions it for quality and process improvement, but its menus (t tests, regression, correlation, time series) are general statistics procedures.
Does Minitab run in the cloud?
The product page lists both desktop and cloud versions.
Can Minitab work with R or Python?
The Predictive Analytics Module lists R and Python integration.
