W.M. Keck Foundation Research Grants: Programs and How to Apply

The W.M. Keck Foundation is a private foundation, established in 1954 by William Myron Keck, founder of the Superior Oil Company, and based in Los Angeles. Science and Engineering Research

Covers physical sciences, life sciences, and engineering. The Foundation looks for proposals built around a clearly identified fundamental scientific question, often involving new instrumentation or a novel combination of validated and emerging methods, rather than an incremental extension of an existing research program. Applied engineering aimed narrowly at improving efficiency or reducing cost of an existing process or product is not a fit.

Medical Research

Covers basic biomedical science. The Foundation is explicit that it does not fund disease-specific projects, translational or bench-to-bedside research, clinical trials, drug discovery or delivery, medical devices, or biomarker/diagnostic screening work — the Medical Research area is scoped to fundamental biological questions, not applied or clinical medicine. Institutions and reviewers preparing a Keck submission should read this exclusion carefully, since it is one of the most common reasons a technically strong proposal is a poor fit for this particular program.

Across both areas, the Foundation also does not fund conferences, symposia, budget supplements to already-funded work, or continuation/follow-on funding for a previously completed Keck grant.

  1. Concept stage.
