ZoteroBib Citation Generator: How to Use It (APA, MLA, Chicago)

How to use the ZoteroBib citation generator: add sources by DOI or URL, pick APA, copy the bibliography, and export before browser storage is cleared.

ZoteroBib is a free web tool from the Zotero project that turns a URL, ISBN, DOI, PubMed ID, arXiv ID or title into a formatted bibliography, with no account and no software to install. Its main limit is where the bibliography lives: by default it sits in your browser’s local storage, so export it before you clear your browser data.

What ZoteroBib is used for in research

ZoteroBib builds a quick, one-off bibliography without a full reference manager. The Zotero team introduced it on 14 May 2018 as a way to produce citations by pasting an identifier, then copying the result or sending it on to a reference manager. It suits a single paper or assignment. For a growing library with notes, PDFs and word-processor plugins, the desktop application described in Zotero for researchers is the better fit.

Access: where to open it

ZoteroBib runs in the browser at zbib.org. The official FAQ states that you can use it “without creating an account or installing any software.” Nothing needs to be downloaded; if you want to move entries into Zotero later, the Zotero Connector’s “Save to Zotero” toolbar button handles that (see the step below).

Step by step: add sources, choose a style, copy the bibliography

  1. Add a source. Paste a URL, ISBN, DOI, PubMed ID or arXiv ID into the search box, or type a title. If a site cannot be read, the FAQ suggests trying another site or an identifier, and you can always enter the details manually.
  2. Review the item. ZoteroBib fetches the metadata automatically, but the Zotero team says you should always check your entries, because the data can be wrong or incomplete. Open the entry and check each field (authors, title, date, container title, DOI or URL) against the source itself. Use the manual editor to fix anything missing or wrong.
  3. Choose the citation style. ZoteroBib supports more than 10,000 CSL styles, including APA, MLA and Chicago/Turabian, which are the same styles Zotero uses. Pick your style in the style selector; the whole bibliography reformats at once.
  4. Copy the output. One click copies the formatted bibliography to the clipboard. You can also copy in-text citations (including page numbers) or generate HTML, according to the Zotero launch announcement.

Using it for APA

There is no separate APA mode or APA-specific setting. APA is one of the styles in the style list, so “ZoteroBib APA citation generator” simply means choosing an APA style from that list. The style list is the only control: check the style name shown against the version your instructor or journal requires, and compare a finished entry with your own style guide, because the tool’s output is only as good as the metadata it fetched. For the same task in desktop Zotero, see changing citation style in Zotero.

Output and how to read it

The result is a formatted bibliography list in the chosen style. Two checks catch most problems: confirm every entry has the fields your style needs, and confirm that web pages and preprints show the title and date you actually see on the source. If an entry looks wrong, the cause is usually incomplete fetched metadata rather than the style, so edit the item instead of changing styles.

If pasting into a word processor mangles the formatting, the FAQ says to choose Download RTF from the Export menu. To keep the data in a file, use “Download RIS” or “Download BibTeX”. Either file can be imported into any reference manager. BibTeX users who want stable citation keys can read Better BibTeX for Zotero.

Troubleshooting

My bibliography disappeared

ZoteroBib stores your bibliography in your browser’s local storage by default. According to the FAQ, you can close the page and return to it, and it lasts until you delete it or clear your browser’s cache, with exceptions. Safari on macOS and iOS, and any other browser on iOS, automatically clear local storage for a site you have not visited for 7 days; private or incognito mode deletes the bibliography when you close the window; and some system-cleaning tools or browser refresh features can clear it. If you use “Link to this version” to upload a copy, that copy gets a link on zbib.org, and each uploaded version is stored for at least six months from when it was created or last viewed. Before clearing browser data or switching browsers, download RIS or BibTeX.

An item was not found, or fields are blank

Try another identifier for the same work (DOI instead of URL, for example), search by title, or add the item manually. Always re-check the fields afterward.

I want my bibliography in Zotero

Click the Zotero Connector’s “Save to Zotero” toolbar button, or download RIS or BibTeX and import the file. The Zotero documentation calls the Connector’s save button “the most convenient and reliable way to add items” to Zotero desktop, which also accepts ISBN, DOI, PubMed ID, arXiv ID or ADS Bibcode through its Add Item by Identifier option.

Free alternatives and next steps

Tool What the official documentation says
ZoteroBib (zbib.org) Works in the browser without an account or installation; bibliography kept in browser local storage by default; exports RIS and BibTeX.
Zotero desktop with the Connector Adds items through the Connector’s save button or by identifier (ISBN, DOI, PubMed ID, arXiv ID, ADS Bibcode); the library is stored in the application rather than a browser tab.

For other reference managers, see Zotero alternatives for researchers and the side-by-side Zotero vs Mendeley comparison. If you are citing in slides, citing sources in PowerPoint with Zotero covers that case.

FAQ

Is ZoteroBib an APA citation generator?

It generates APA citations among more than 10,000 CSL styles, including APA, MLA and Chicago/Turabian. Choose the APA style in the style selector and check the entries against your style guide.

Does ZoteroBib need an account?

No. The FAQ says you can use it without creating an account or installing any software.

Where is my bibliography stored?

In your browser’s local storage by default. It lasts until you delete it or clear your browser’s cache. On Safari and any iOS browser it is cleared after 7 days without a visit, and private or incognito mode deletes it when the window closes. Uploaded copies made with “Link to this version” are kept for at least six months from creation or last view.

Can I send my ZoteroBib bibliography to Zotero?

Yes. Use the Zotero Connector’s “Save to Zotero” button, or download RIS or BibTeX and import the file into Zotero or another reference manager.
