George Church Withdraws From Nature Methods Byline

Five researchers, including Harvard geneticist George Church, were moved off a Nature Methods byline into acknowledgements amid U.S. scrutiny of China ties.

On 9 July 2026, Nature Methods published a peer-reviewed Commentary laying out the future agenda of the SpatioTemporal Omics Consortium (STOC), an international collaboration formed in 2022 to advance spatial and temporal multi-omics research across species. Weeks before publication, five researchers who had been on the accepted author list were moved instead into the paper’s acknowledgements section — among them Harvard geneticist George Church, according to reporting by Science (AAAS).

What changed on the byline

The paper, “SpatioTemporal Omics Consortium: a global effort for biological discovery across species, space and time” (DOI: 10.1038/s41592-026-03150-6), lists co-authors from government-funded laboratories in China alongside institutions in Australia, Italy, and elsewhere. Per Science’s reporting, Church — who “provided broad direction on the paper” — was the first of the five to ask to be removed from the author list. His lab colleague Jiwoon Park, a postdoc jointly appointed in Church’s lab (Wyss Institute/Harvard Medical School) and Christopher Mason’s lab (Weill Cornell Medicine), was originally co-first author and was also moved into acknowledgements. Lipin Loo (University of Sydney), Park’s original co-first-author counterpart, did not withdraw and became sole first author. The identities of the other three researchers who withdrew have not been reliably reported and are not named here.

Weibin Liu, vice president of BGI Group and a co-corresponding author on the paper, told Science the change “doesn’t reflect the truth of their contribution,” but described it as “the best compromise possible in this situation.”

Why now: tightening U.S. scrutiny of China-linked collaboration

Science ties the withdrawals to a broader pattern of U.S. government pressure on international, and specifically China-linked, research collaboration in 2026: a proposed White House Office of Management and Budget rule that would restrict collaboration between U.S. federal grant recipients and researchers at non-U.S. institutions, and the National Science Foundation’s stated intent to halt most collaborations involving China specifically. Both sit inside a wider push by the current administration to constrain international research partnerships. For researchers named on a China-linked byline, the calculation increasingly weighs formal credit for intellectual contribution against career and funding exposure — a pressure that has nothing to do with the quality or extent of the work itself.

The authorship-criteria tension

The episode lands squarely on ground CASRAI’s credit-authorship work already maps: what separates a legitimate contributor from the byline for reasons that have nothing to do with contribution. Journals’ own authorship frameworks — the ICMJE’s four authorship criteria and NISO’s CRediT taxonomy — exist to tie authorship to demonstrable contribution (conception, data acquisition, analysis, drafting, and approval of the final version), not to institutional affiliation or political circumstance. Nature Methods‘s own acknowledgements policy states that section “should not be used to list contributors who meet our criteria for authorship” — the exact tension Science’s reporting highlights: two people the paper’s own co-authors describe as having met the authorship bar were nonetheless moved out of it.

It is worth being precise about what this is not. It is not ghost authorship (a real contributor omitted entirely, with no acknowledgement at all) or gift authorship (someone credited despite an insufficient contribution). Both of those distort the byline for reasons internal to a lab or a paper — vanity, seniority, reciprocity. This case differs in mechanism: contribution is not disputed by any party quoted in the reporting, and the researchers remain named in acknowledgements rather than disappearing from the record entirely. What moved them off the byline was an external, geopolitical pressure that authorship-criteria frameworks like CRediT and ICMJE were never designed to arbitrate.

Why this matters for research administrators

For institutions managing CRediT statements and authorship records, this case is a concrete illustration of a gap those frameworks don’t yet address: contribution-based criteria assume good-faith editorial and institutional conditions, and have no mechanism for a contributor stepping back from formal credit under external pressure while still being acknowledged as a contributor. Research offices working with internationally co-authored papers — especially in fields where China-based collaboration is common, such as genomics and spatial omics — should expect more cases like this as funder- and agency-level restrictions on international collaboration continue to tighten through 2026, and should treat acknowledgement-only status on an otherwise-qualifying contribution as a flag worth documenting internally, not simply a routine editorial choice.
