Research impact and bibliometric indicators are the quantitative measures built on top of the citation databases and discovery tools covered elsewhere in this cluster. This sub-cluster separates two distinct families of indicator, following the distinction formalized by NISO's Alternative Assessment Metrics (Altmetrics) Initiative and its recommended practice RP-25-2016: traditional citation-based bibliometrics — citation counts, journal impact factors, h-index and its variants — and newer "altmetric" indicators that track attention outside the formal citation record, such as mentions in policy documents, news coverage, social media discussion, and data or software reuse.
